INTRO A. Every one of us woke up this morning and put on an outfit that we would be wearing the majority of the day. B. We are all at the age where our presentation matters. It has always mattered but in college specifically, we are now looking for careers, internships, connections, etc. but we should not have to lose our own sense of style to do these things. C. As someone who has been told that she cares a little too much on the stuff nobody pays attention to well I’m here to explain to all of you why it is so important to care about even the little things when getting dressed. D. First Impressions matter and what you are wearing says something about you before you even get the chance to speak. E. By the end of this speech I hope you all have found a new awareness on why you should care about your presentation, steps to take in order to always put your best self forward, and the benefits of expressing yourself through clothing. NEED A. You are what you wear. B. Today, we are told by pop-culture what to buy, what to wear, and how to wear it. C. With these opinions coming at us from all directions we tend to lose what we actually want to be a portrayal of us. - We’re not all Paris Hilton so we most likely don’t have a closet covered in hot pink and diamonds. - We’re also not Kanye West with a closet full of bland colored average clothes. - We are ourselves and it is important to remember that that is the person we want people to see when we look at us. D. Psychology Today said that our generations issue with expressing ourselves through fashion is that we confuse fashion with style. SATISFACTION A. Style is a gateway to your self expression. Fashion is mindless. B. The fashion industry is always evolving, look at the early 2000’s for example.

People were wearing the tackiest outfits because capri leggings under a multi colored dress with a glitter scarf and foam wedges apparently looked good. - I can confidently tell you while I’m standing up here that none of those articles of clothing or accessories is an accurate representation of who I am, or ever was, but I had that exact outfit in my closet because it looked good on Ashley Tisdale. C. Instead of looking towards the fashion magazines and labels for style, use them as guidance into creating your own. D. Vogue and Versace should be used as a starting point, it is up to you to add the accessories and mix-match the clothing to make it unique to your personality. VISUALIZATION A. We should all aim to create a fashion personality for ourselves. B. Within our new fashion personalities, we need to imprint our style. - The way we arrange our outfits to create our identity. C. People will get a realistic sense of who we actually are if we follow through with the steps mentioned above. CONCLUSION A. To bring everything back together, fashion is a direct expression of your character, and what you wear says something about you before you get the chance to even speak. B. I’m asking you to take an extra few minutes tomorrow morning when you are getting dressed and choose something that represents you and who you want to portray. C. Even though I am also a tired college student that gives myself the least amount of time possible to get ready because I would rather sleep, I do try my best to always put on something that accurately describes who I am. - It might be a vintage, trendy tshirt, or a nice blouse, but that is who I am. D. I know some of you think this does not effect you, or that you already dress to represent your sense of character. Just think of this speech and choose a different accessory or a different shoe and watch how your whole persona changes.
