Description

Pertinent negatives are negative findings that help you rule out suspected problems. They also indicate that a thorough and complete examination and history were performed. The benefits of Pertinent Negative in human interaction are many, to have better communication with each other, to understand actions and human behavior better, to have better relationships, negotiations, etc. (Briggs 2016). How can we use the broader view of things in improving our relationships with others? I believe we can use the broader view of things to improve our relationships with others by paying more attention to the things people are not saying. I remember few months ago when I was having a conversation with a lady about some incident that happened to her. I could sense she was being careful with words and out of curiosity I asked some pertinent questions. From the limited responses she gave I figured out the missing piece. The pertinent negative played a good role here. If I were a manager, how would I use pertinent negative in understanding employee behaviors and actions? The pertinent negative is a great tool for people management even in the work place. As a manager I actually do use the concept of Pertinent negative when hiring people especially during interviews. I ask questions like “what interests you about this particular role?” “How do you plan to resolve conflicts?” “Do you prefer to work as an individual or in a team”? The responses I receive helps me understand my employee’s behaviors and actions. Few days ago one of my employee who happens to be a team lead was having some difficulty with some of her team members. I asked to speak with her and after our meeting I could make a diagnosis to help her see what was missing and how she could resolve conflicts in her team and help manage relationships with them. Reflect on your current situation to see how this concept can improve your own attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors. Personally I was thrilled to read about the concept of pertinent negative. I will say the word “pertinent negative” is new to me but I have always practiced it without knowing what the term was called. In my current situation as a manager this concept has helped me a lot. My attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors are better because this concept has helped me to work on seeing a bigger picture and to pay more attention to every detail no matter how little. Also for my attitude I have learned to take time to listen more and hear what is not being said so I can find out what is missing. In conclusion the pertinent negative concept has improved my outlook in life and helped me build better relationships. References Briggs .D. (2016, July).
