The Pertinent Negative as per our perceptions Even though the term “Pertinent Negative” was coined by Amy Herman mainly for the medical field, it’s meaning can be applied within our personal interactions. Pertinent Negative can be defined as information in a patient’s medical history that could be important to diagnosing their specific case. When Pertinent Negative is applied to our personal perceptions, it can be defined as important undisclosed personal background or past experiences that could shed light to a situation we are facing (David Burkus, 2016). Learning to gather this undisclosed information is an extremely helpful practice as it can make a big difference in diagnosing a situation. Individuals filter information through their own limited personal experiences and values. Yet, their worldviews interpret their surrounding data through their particular vantage point of life (Taylor, 2019). What is sometimes overlooked in such personal views though is the missing pieces of the story. This is where being able to diagnose the pertinent negative information comes into use. Proper diagnosis is able to fill in or notice the gaps of a perception and worldview caused by missing or nonexistent information. Consequently then, the pertinent negative should be helpful by painting a more descriptive picture of whatever is being observed. Let’s answer the following questions in an attempt to shed more light to this topic: 1. What are the benefits of Pertinent Negative in human interaction? The benefits of this obviously is knowing the full story, being able to diagnose the situation and prescribe a proper solution for an individual. Understanding the Pertinent Negative or important missing information can be vital to using your ability to help someone effectively. With this line

of thought, the pertinent negative should help individuals not be so quick to label others and misdiagnosis perceived human interactions (The Pertinent, 2016). 2. How can we use the broader view of things in improving our relationships with others? Listening to someone’s story for both, what is there and what is not there can create clarity and avoid assumptions. We can improve our relationships with others “Active listening has many benefits. It allows you to understand the point of view of another person and respond with empathy” (Cuncic, 2019). 3. If you were a manager, how would you use pertinent negative in understanding employee behaviors and actions? As a manager in a work environment, knowing a person’s past experiences can help understand their capabilities and place them in the proper team for tasks they are going to succeed in. Understanding their personal lives deeply can also help me gain trust with the employee. It can give me valuable insight to have a broad picture of my teams and be able to designate various tasks as well. 4. Reflect on your current situation to see how this concept can improve your own attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors. In one of my current situations as a marriage counselor, I have to practice good listening and assessment skills. The Pertinent Negative has been a tool I use as well. When I try to help individuals, I have to listen for what is said and what is not said. This is especially true when a couple approaches me with a personal problem they are trying to solve in their marriage. The

pertinent negative can help the individual potentially boil down their issues to its core before we can then work on them together (MacDonald, 2015). I plan on using the clinical definition of the Pertinent Negative to bring them into the fold of problem-solving their issues together, especially when I am not around to help them. I believe a more informed client can be empowered to solve their own issues even before it starts.
