Description

Nursing interventions:  Administer with food, in small doses at start of treatment  Avoid administering with high protein means due to reduced therapeutic effect with high protein content in food Patient Teaching:  Advise patients to avoid vitamin preparations and foods containing pyridoxine such as wheat gum, liver, legumes because they can reduce the therapeutic effects of levodopa  Advice clients to eat protein in several small portions during the day  (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2019; Holman et al., 2019).

Nursing Interventions  Decrease dosage of levodopa if possible  Administer amantadine as prescribed to decrease dyskinesias Patient education  Advice patients that dosage reduction can result in resumption of PD symptoms (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2019; Holman et al., 2019).

Nursing Interventions  Monitor patient’s vital sings and ECG readings  Use cautiously in patients with cardiovascular disease Patient education  Advise patient to monitor vital signs at home and report any abnormalities (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2019; Holman et al., 2019).

Nursing Interventions  Administer second-generation antipsychotic medications as prescribed to decrease symptoms  Assess for concurrent use of antipsychotic MAO-I medications which can result in an antihypertensive crisis Patient Education  Advise patient to report any signs of psychosis such as hallucinations to the HCP  Instruct patient to not use levodopa within two weeks of MAO-I use (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2019; Holman et al., 2019).

Nursing Interventions:  Avoid use of medication in clients who have skin lesions that have not been diagnosed. Client teaching  Advice client to report any family history of malignant hyperthermia as it can be genetically inherited. (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2019; Holman et al., 2019).
