Description

1 Sameed Sohail Ms. Papaiconomou HSB4UO 23rd October, 2019 Pleasantville (1998) A Case Study of Social Change Pleasantville shows the functionalist point of view in human science. From the functionalist point of view, Pleasantville is the perfect society. Each native knows their job in the society and perfectly does it. This is the reason Pleasantville is so lovely. In Pleasantville, each grown-up lady is a hitched, and each spouse is a homemaker. In this reality, the spouses don't need to realize how to cook or do house work since they have never expected to. At the point when change is brought into this society, a couple of the parts of the organism do not function properly. A number of the housewives understand that there are exciting things outside the bounds of their home. Therefore, a couple of the chores at home get ignored. This minor disruption in the home sets off a chain of different events. The mother character in the movie meets an unmarried ice cream shop manager and starts spending a lot of time and nights with him. At one point of the movie when her husband’s arrives home, he just hears his own voice repeated “Hi honey where is my food. He doesn't miss his wife, though the role that she played in his daily life. He was totally dependent on his wife to take care of him, and all his wife wanted form to do was provide money for the family, she was busy at home throughout the day. However, later she realizes that she can turn into an independent individual, and take full care of herself rather than worrying about her husband. As per the functionalist point of view, this disturbance would lead to a bigger disturbance society. The movie later shows the consequence and the confusion in the family.

Change is likely the most noticeable thing in a movie. Change had numerous symbols in the movie, yet the utilization of colors was the most evident one. As we saw in the movie each character violated the norms that were set by the ideal 1950s society, the individual would change from black and white to fully color. Hence the mother in the movie picked up shading as her relationship progressed with the manager of the ice cream shop. Her relationship and being away from home impacted the family badly. From a 50s perspective, leaving her husband would have been considered disgraceful, however

2 Sameed Sohail Ms. Papaiconomou HSB4UO 23rd October, 2019 from the 90s point of view, this was the change she had to make in order to be happy. If we talk about the political occasions of the late 90s, The American president himself was engaged with an improper relationship. If it was the same situation in 1950sthen he surely would have been kicked from politics, and would not have been able to campaign for another candidate. Don Knotts the actor in this following movie is given a supporting role. Knotts importance is a reference to the peaceful and fictional town of Mayberry. As it can be seen in the movie the way he is aged and this is symbolic. The film took place in 90s however; the values that have been represented by the Knotts are form 1950s. His character was searching for a teenager to visit Pleasantville who would not corrupt it, however he failed at his task, similarly as the values and norm of the 1950s are not really appealing todays present youth. Gradually, the whole town starts to light up and show colors, even the individuals who were against change. The town of Pleasantville experiences rain for the first time with constantly a full bright color rainbow. This represents symbolisms as we saw at first everything was in chaos however, after some time everything turns into something peaceful and beautiful. Another sign of change in the town was when at the start of the movie Jennifer asked people what was out of the town, everyone was blank and no one replied however, near the end of the movie there were busses with names of other towns appeared. This can be seen as a huge change. The Only change that was not presented was the subcultures. In the whole film, there isn't one person who has an ethnicity other than white, and most of these whites are male

Though the authorities tried to stop the norm being violated, but their efforts went useless. Despite the fact that the individuals in control needed to keep everything basic and morally sound, they were escaping the complexities of life. The film focused on that change was an important piece of life, and it shouldn't be feared. This idea can be applied to numerous issues that the country is confronting today. Homosexual marriage, for instance, is something that isn't really traditional, yet the writer of this film in all probability would encourage acknowledgment of this perspective on marriage. The film

3 Sameed Sohail Ms. Papaiconomou HSB4UO 23rd October, 2019 portrays that since something doesn't show up ethically stable doesn't imply that it is the downfall of society. The film made a parallel from today’s society to the society of the 50s. The individuals of that decade didn't need change, however if change had not come, ladies would have been considered as slaves and ignored. Change is great. This is the most promoted part of the film and the basic political message. Indeed, there are outcomes to change, yet society must believe that the positive attitude exceed the awful. The writer of this film used a conflict of 90s culture with 50s values to represent a similar conflict that is happening today with new political and social view and mainstream society's political and social perspectives. Numerous individuals think back on the 50s as a kinder, gentler time, yet mistreatment and inequality surely don't appear to be kinder or gentler....
