CASE 3.1: Q.1. Sean's approach towards creating WBS for the cost is not accurate. In the initial stage he first assumed the cost of a project based on a different project than what he was making. A two-car garage cost was increased by 50% to equate to a three-car garage. Later after comparing with his competitors he assumed that the price offered by them is higher so to match up the market price he reduced the cost without any proper calculation by 20% and also declared a 10% profit on this. This I feel is completely wrong approach as well as unprofessional on his side to declare such statements of profit without actual knowledge and calculations. This might cost the company a huge loss and market failure for their project.
Instead of this, he should have tried to make a cost estimate after referring to a previous project made on same thing that is three-car garage. And he could have also taken help from a past project manager who handled some common projects for a better cost estimation rather than just depending on estimated percentage cost and profits.
CASE 3.2: Q.1. Deva's approach towards to scheduling work and cost estimation is pretty good and organized in every manner. I feel it's good time to contact movers and packers because if she is too organized from starting there will be less problems in the end and consume less time. She made a good Gantt chart of the 7 days in three parts and organized them well. The packers and movers take almost a month to prepare quotes and also advance appointment is to be scheduled due to high demand and moving of office stuff will require more space and vehicles as well as lot of time. I liked her cost estimation approach and time management. Q.2. If I was Deva's manager I would have found her approach comprehensive. She laid out all the details in organized manner. She made a good breakdown of 7-days for moving into three parts. She also estimated the total number of boxes, equipments and furniture to be moved, and then contacted moving contractor in well advance to get quotes and appointment beforehand. She also plans to hire temporary workers after moving to unpack and also estimated number of workers needed as well as price quote from the agency. She explained everything possible in very detail and as a manager I would have approved it. Q.3. If I would to plan the moving of office I would have also started planning it well before like Deva. In my opinion I would rather not move who office all together but particular department just so the office isn't closed for a week. Though it also seems a good option, this can be a loss to company in some way. I would move department wise which may require mover contractors to be hire for more days but less shifts every day. And also it would require less people to move so need of hiring temporary workers. But I would bare similarity to Deva's plan as well in being well organized and well beforehand get quotes from the mover and contractors. I would make Gantt chart and budgeting of every task to be performed and requirements of furniture and boxes to be moved each day for a week....
