Description

1. Describe your initial reaction to the concepts in this video. My initial reaction was that of amazement. The initial concept in this video is one which shows the disparity of wealth distribution within American society. It gives us information on what we as Americans believe it to be, our opinion on what would be ideal for us as well what it really is. 2. Did any of the information in the video surprise you? Why or why not? No, it didn’t. I grew up with two working parents. You needed that with seven children. But my parents had good jobs that paid well. So, in my neighborhood, we were one of three families considered to be well off. This was because my parents worked hard to provide for us. They didn’t want us go through what they experienced in racially segregated south. My father was a supervisor with a local labor union and my mother worked for the state of New Jersey. We had two cars and one of the bigger houses on the block. But that was necessary because of my family size. My parents taught us to budget our money and spend wisely. So now as an adult, parent and husband I still practice those same techniques. However, not everyone in my city was in a position or as fortunate as I was growing up. 3. Discuss how a person’s social class (also referred to as socioeconomic status) can affect his or her chances of success. Most people on the lower side of the social economic ladder are made up of African Americans and Latinos. Both are much more likely to be in this situation because of factors such neighborhoods, education and jobs. The median Black family, with just over $3,500, owns just 2 percent of the wealth of the nearly $147,000 the median White family owns. The median Latino family, with just over $6,500, owns just 4 percent of the wealth of the median White family. Put

differently, the median White family has 41 times more wealth than the median Black family and 22 times more wealth than the median Latino family. (Institute for Policy Studies, 2019) The relationship between socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity is deeply intertwined. As a result, these minority communities share the same characteristics such as low economic development, poor health conditions, and low levels of educational attainment. It’s also been a steady risk factor for many of the problems that has plagued these communities.
