Baseball and the American Character • Baseball unites people for a single cause (i.e. whole state of CO rallying behind Rox in Fall of 2007 during World Series bid) American Exceptionalism • Belief that the US is different (better) than other countries • Difference between America & Europe: land in America, not in Europe. ○ Land allowed large fields to exist (needed because no outfield walls in 19th century baseball) • Baseball is democratic: everyone on team has equal opportunity to score a run • Rugged individualism: baseball celebrates individual (i.e. batter vs. 9 opponents) Albert Spalding • 1870's - helped set up National League, Chicago Cubs, and then retired & started up sporting goods company • Supported myth that baseball was invented by an American • No class distinction. "As long as you play baseball, we'll play with you." History • 1918 World Series: Cubs vs. Red Sox - national anthem first played to show patriotism & to keep baseball going despite WWI FDR & "Green Light Letter" • FDR said baseball was too important for Americans to shut down for war • Inexpensive form of recreation, which was important for people who were working extra hard (i.e. making weapons of war)
