The Blue Cross G. K. Chesterton writes the blue cross, a police narrative novel with an external narrator, excepting some moments in which dialogues between the characters are used. It is about the persecution of a criminal that goes behind the “The Blue Cross”.

Aristide Valentin is the head of the Paris police: lean face, black beard and with waistcoat. It is considered the critic of story, while the criminal (Flambeau), only the artist, because Valentin goes behind the clues that criminal leaves to him. This Criminal always run away of his crimes. Father Brown, a clergyman, who is believed to be supporting the criminal, shows some clues to help detectives for the arrest him, Flambeau.

Flambeau is the criminal. His dressing up skills makes difficult his recognition to the police; for that reason he escapes from their hands. He is extremely big, with bodily daring and physical strength.

Chesterton use the typical vocabulary of police slang: “crimes, waistcoat, knocked, pursuer”… In addition, in the dialogues, it is use an everyday language: “I zink, ‘em, ‘ave”. The linear narrative rhythm makes easier the continuity of history. The plot includes all stories in a linear plot without any gap.

The clues Father Brown provides are in different setting: London, first, a pretty restaurant where the waiter says that a small man threw a glass to the wall. Secondly, a supermarket where the posters of fruits were changed. Valentin ask, “Which way did these parson go?” and another restaurant. In this last one, the mirror is broken by an umbrella- said the waiter. Finally, Hampstead Heath, where the police arrests the criminal with the help of Father Brown and Valentin critic the clues that he use to find Flambeau....
