Connective tissue: Supports and binds body parts. Muscular tissue: Enables movement of structures in the body. Nervous tissue: Enables response to stimuli. If an epithelium consists of only one layer of cells on a basement membrane, it is called simple epithelium. More than one layer of cells on a basement membrane represents stratified epithelium. A tissue with a single layer of thin flattened cells is called squamous whereas a tissue with multiple layers of cells having height and width of equal dimension is called cuboidal.
