PRESENT PROGRESSIVE Form: [am/is/are + verb-ing]

Examples: 1) I am learning. 2) He is studying. 3) They are taking a test. Rule #1 You can use the present progressive with verbs to say that something is happening right now, at this very moment (or is not happening right now).

Examples: 1) He is asking the professor some questions right now. 2) The students are learning about the present progressive tense. 3) They are not reading their textbooks. Rule #2 You can use the present progressive to speak about actions that are in the “extended present” and that last for a temporary amount of time.

Examples: 1) I am studying English this semester. 2) I am not studying to become a dentist this year. 3) I am reading a couple of books about writing these days. Rule #3 We can use the present progressive to refer to a future plan.

Examples:

1) I am meeting with my professor after class. 2) They are not going to study tonight. 3) He is writing an essay tomorrow night. Rule #4 We cannot use non-action verbs in the present progressive. Instead, we must use the simple present. 1. 2. 3. 4.
