Professionalism One of the most used strengths in reference letters to show employers why a person should be hired is professionalism. There are many different aspects to professionalism. In Introduction to Health Care, Mitchell and Haroun describe professionalism as “caring competence” (298). Professionalism becomes extremely important in the health care field; acting unprofessional in a health care environment can be harmful not only to your career but potentially to the health and safety of a patient. Being professional throughout your schooling that prepares you for your career is also very important; this is where you get your knowledge and training about all aspects of your profession, and if you act immaturely during this time it could impact your ability to do your job, or even be hired for a job later on. I am very passionate about health care, I have been planning my career for 2 years now and I know that professionalism is going to be a big part of the process to getting where I want to be. In my role as a student at the University of New England, being professional will be more beneficial for me personally. Having a professional attitude will help get me to where I want to be. Many of the staff at UNE can be largely helpful when it comes to pursuing your career goals and can help you accomplish many things, therefore creating a professional relationship with the staff can also help me get to where I want to be. Forbes Magazine’s "5 Ways To Make a Killer First Impression” gives tips on certain professional aspects of meeting someone for the first time. In my opinion, number five, “be interested and interesting”, is an important aspect when it comes to being a new student at a university. They say people can tell immediately when someone is not interested in being somewhere or doing something, and that is not the impression you want to give your professors at a university. I am attending UNE because I have a passion for health care careers and I know it is an amazing opportunity to get my schooling here, but if I were to walk in acting like I didn’t want to be there learning from my professors that makes a bad first impression that will most likely stick with me (5 Ways). This aspect is also important in the workplace; how you present yourself is a huge part of professionalism. When I begin to work as a health care provider, if I were to walk into the office and approach my patient as if I were distracted or not interested in being there with them, that is going to affect the way they think of me as their provider. A patient wants a confident and professional provider who makes them feel safe. Tips two and three also go along with presentation of yourself, and are a very important aspect of the health care setting. Your appearance, both clothing wise and body language, is going to be a part of your first impression to people (5 Ways). Dress is a major part of professionalism, as we discussed in class, it is a huge part of getting a job as well as keeping a job. The way you dress in a health care career is going to be noticed not only by your fellow employees, but also by your patients. They aren’t going to want their provider coming in looking unclean, in wrinkled, nonprofessional clothing to give them care. The way you present yourself is going to be linked with the respect you gain from the

people around you (Professionalism). If your body language is bored, and unconnected from what is going on, your fellow employees are not going to think of you as the professional they want to work with, and your patients may not respect you as their provider. “Individuals in all health care occupations display professionalism by dedicating themselves...and providing...high quality service” (Mitchell 298). Professionalism as a student and as an employee share some other characteristics as well. It is expected that professional language be used when approaching or contacting a university staff member, just as it is expected at all times in the workplace. Whether you are talking to a patient, an employee, or your boss, your language and vocabulary is going to represent how you see them. If you address them unprofessionally, and communicate with them inappropriately, that will not show them that you respect them and they will not think of you as a professional they want to work with (Professionalism). I believe I will absolutely go further in my education here at UNE if I take a professional approach, and the further I go with my education and training, the further I will go in my career. The biggest difference between professionalism in my role as a student and in my role in my future career is that if I were to act unprofessional at school (in a way that were still appropriate) the attention would simply be focused on other students who are acting professional. The staff’s time and energy would be spent on those students rather than on me, if I were to act uninterested and unprofessionally. In a work environment, acting unprofessional could result in losing my job, being demoted or put on probation, but also it could result in the harm of a patient, another coworker, or myself (Professionalism). In a healthcare profession, the way you act is most important regarding the safety of the patients and people around you. Acting unprofessionally could potentially be dangerous in a work situation, whereas at school it would only be a negative impact on my own education and future goals.
