Description

Student Professionalism Best Practices As a UBC Sauder School of Business student, your behaviour not only impacts you personally, it has an impact on your fellow classmates, the Business Career Centre, the alumni community, and the school as a whole. The strength of the UBC Sauder brand in the business community, the success our recruitment initiatives and networking events, depend on the professionalism of every student. To present a positive professional image and enhance your career potential in the wider business community, please carefully read through and follow the best practices outlined below. If you do not follow these best practices, you may lose your access to the Business Career Centre, its staff, resources, job postings, and programming.

PROFESSIONALISM • Treat UBC Sauder and Business Career Centre staff, faculty, alumni, fellow students, and members of the business community with respect and professionalism. • Be on time to events, appointments, interviews, phone calls, etc. • Ensure UBC Sauder resources, job postings, and web resources are used only by you. • Keep your CWL username and password private and do not share with anyone. • Provide honest and accurate information to the Business Career Centre and recruiters. • Never sacrifice the reputation of UBC Sauder or fellow stakeholders for your own personal gain. • If you are privileged to have a mentor, respect their time, be coachable, and express your thanks.

JOB AND OFFERS & NEGOTIATIONS • Once you receive a formal offer, thank the company and ask for time to think about it before providing your decision. We encourage on-campus recruiters to adhere to the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) standards , which states that they are to give you three to four weeks to respond to full-time job offers . • Review the Navigating the Offer Toolkit available to all UBC Sauder students. • Let the Business Career Centre know when you accept offers for co-op, short-term, internship, and permanent work opportunities. • Do not go on more interviews after you accept a job offer. • Do not renege on your commitment to a company by accepting an offer from another organization. • Complete your program’s employment questionnaire on the Sauder Employment Analytics Tool (SEAT) upon graduation. RESUMES, COVER LETTERS, SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLS • Present yourself positively, professionally, and ethically on paper, in person, and online. • Review the Resume Toolkit and Cover Letter Toolkit to learn effective techniques. • Submit your resume for the resume book if applicable for your program by the deadline date and per our guidelines. • Only send out resumes and cover letters that are error-free. • Remove inappropriate content from social networking sites and use privacy settings.

BUSINESS CAREER CENTRE / DAP PROGRAMMING • Take advantage of the programming and services offered by the Business Career Centre to build your skills in areas such as resume writing, networking, interviewing, emotional intelligence, etc. • RSVP, attend, be punctual, and prepare for professional development workshops and events. • Provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you are unable to attend professional development workshops or events (cancel your RSVP on COOL or contact the Business Career Centre directly by email or phone). • Arrive at the Business Career Centre 5 minutes before your scheduled coaching appointment time to swipe in. If you are more than 10 minutes late for your coaching appointment, your appointment may be cancelled at the discretion of your Career Manager; you will be considered a "no-show". • Dress appropriately for recruiters: check the COOL event description for the appropriate dress code, which is normally business casual for daytime events , and business attire for career fairs, special events, and company recruiting sessions. RECRUITING AND NETWORKING EVENTS • RSVP, attend, and be punctual at employer recruiting and networking events. If you cannot attend, please provide the Business Career Centre at least two business days’ notice (so we can reduce catering if required). • Take advantage of these events to practice your skills and build your network; try to meet new people and make new business connections. • Treat corporate guests with professionalism. Make sure you respect their time, and allow other students time with them. • Ask well researched, appropriate questions; asking directly for a job can be perceived as rude and will not likely lead to an offer. INTERVIEWS • Review the Interview Skills Toolkit to learn effective techniques. • Take the time to prepare for formal interviews by: o Researching the organization so you understand their business. o Developing a list of appropriate questions. o Doing mock interviews. o Practicing your answers to behavioral-based or case questions. o Knowing your strengths and weaknesses . o Coming with examples that show your leadership. • Research your transportation route in advance and arrive 10 minutes early. • Dress professionally. • Advise the Business Career Centre as well as the recruiter if you are unable to make an interview (at least 24 hours in advance), which should only be as a result of an emergency. • Provide a formal letter of apology to the employer and the Business Career Centre if you do not show up for your interview. By following these best practices, your professional success and the UBC Sauder brand is strengthened. If you have any questions or concerns about these best practices, please contact the Hari B.
