Description

The heat, water splashing, shrieks, and laughter are some of the things I recall about my childhood. I guess most of you have memories like these. There is a sense of warmth when we recall our childhood. How about writing an essay about it? Either it is for your blog or a school requirement, here are a few tips on how to write one.

How to start As a usual rule, a deductive method is often applied to convey ideas in an essay. This means that the essay should start with a general idea and will be broken down into a specific idea. This is done so that your essay will be organized and coherent. An essay has usually 3 parts which are introduction, body, and conclusion. Yet before you can write anything, we need to identify the topic and make a thesis statement. The topic is what your essay will be about. It is the subject of the essay. In this essay, our topic will be ‘Childhood Memories.’ This will be our general idea. We need to break it down to a more specific idea by identifying our main idea from the general one. The main idea will be the thesis statement. A thesis statement will show your readers on how you will interpret the topic. It is one sentence written in the introductory part of the paper.

Example of thesis An example of a thesis statement for our topic childhood memories could be: Three of the best childhood memory I had with my mom is when we go to the market, when we had our family meals, and when we study together. In this case, your reader will know that you want to proceed with a descriptive essay to interpret your topic since you have narrated three of your best childhood memory with your mom. It is also a more specific idea than just childhood memory because you indicated that it is a childhood memory that is specifically just for your mom.

Making your outline The next step is to make an outline of what you want to discuss in the whole essay base on your thesis statement. An outline is necessary because this will be the writer’s guide on how to go about the essay. An example of the outline base on the thesis above will be: I. A short introduction about childhood memory 

Thesis Statement: Three of the best childhood memory with my mom is when we go to the market, when we had our family meals, and when we study together.

II. Body paragraphs   

Discuss the first memory, when we go to the market together Discuss the second memory, when we had our family meals together Discuss the third memory, when we study together

III. Conclusion Once you have done the three things above, then you can proceed with writing. As per our outline, the first part is to write the introduction. This is where you catch your readers’ attention. Yet, keep it short as you want your readers to continue reading up to your body and conclusion. Below is an example of an introduction.

Example of introduction Tag, your it! Sweaty and puffy, with my little legs, I still ran as fast as I can to tag the next person so I will be released from being “it.” The wind is cool yet the sun is blazing hot but it was Saturday. It was no school day so I had a whole day to have fun. I had great childhood memories, most of them were playing with neighbor friends outside and under the sun. Yet the best memories I had were the simple but warm things I did together with my mom. Three of the best childhood memory I had with my mom is when we go to the market, when we had our family meals, and when we study together.

How to write body paragraphs

The next step is to write the body. As per the outline above, we can create three body paragraphs. As the intention of the essay is to be descriptive, make sure you incorporate enough adjectives that will have your reader be hooked on reading your essay. The three consecutive paragraphs below will be the sample of the body for this essay.

Example of body paragraphs 1st paragraph Market day was an exciting day for me when I was a child. It was a day I could go out and see lots of wonderful things. It was especially a day I got to spend with my mom. My mom was kindhearted and smart. She was a teacher and was usually busy during the weekdays. On two Saturdays of the month, my mom and I go to the wet market in the afternoon. As a curious child, this is where I get to see and know the different kinds of colorful vegetables, different sizes of fish and a variety of meat products. On these times, my mother had taught me the importance of money. I learned to trade and talked to vendors. It was noisy, smelly, and wet yet, I enjoy the buzz and the creative ways the vendors sell their products. Thirst for knowledge had also outdone the smells thus it was always an exciting day for me. 2nd paragraph Family meal times are also great memories. Mealtime was a venue for delicious meals and juicy conversations. My mom never got tired of listening to my stories of how my day went in school and in return she tells stories of her and my dad’s past. I was always curious about what the past was like thus she shared stories of how simple and happy life was during their childhood days. The best meal was during Sunday’s breakfast. The food prepared was mostly my favorites. Soft white rice, jumbo cheese dogs, with fluffy scrambled eggs, deep fried fish and slices of fully ripe yellow mangoes were a sumptuous treat. 3rd paragraph

The last best memory I have is when my mom and I study together. As she was a teacher, she always finds time to help me with homework and prepare me for my exams. She was patient with my questions and diligent with her explanations despite the fact that she was tired the whole day teaching her students as well. School requirements and exams were never a problem for me because of her. I am pretty sure I had the best mom in the world.

How to conclude The last part of the essay is the conclusion. It is where you summarize and emphasize the importance of your thesis statement. Below is an example of a conclusion of this essay.

Example of conclusion My childhood was a great learning adventure I had with my mom. These were warm memories that would be forever stored in my heart. I believe you have a share of yours too. After you finish writing, review and make sure that your grammar and format is correct. I hope this simple tips will help you write a good essay about a childhood memory....
