Provisional Coverage! Provisional or temporary coverage — temporary filling or crown that will be in place for no longer than 90 days (expanded skill in AB, may be different for another province)! Types of provisional coverage 1. Custom provisional! 2. Prefabricated crowns! Indications for provisional coverage - Reduces sensitivity and discomfort of the prepared tooth! - Maintains the function and aesthetics of the prepared tooth! - Protects the margins of the preparation! - Prevents shifting of the adjacent or opposing teeth! Prefabricated crowns - For posterior and anterior applications! - These shell like crowns are available for single unit teeth! • Preformed polymer crowns - Use a polymer shell filled with a hybrid composite resin material! - The resin material bonds with the preformed crown and tooth! • Preformed polycarbonate crowns - Used in cases where appearance is important! - Available in a variety of sizes, shapes and shades! - Commonly used in cases involving fracture of an anterior tooth! - As a result of the missing tooth structure, no preliminary impression can be taken! • Stainless steel crowns - Designed specifically for premolars and molars! - Such crowns are available in a range of sizes for posterior teeth! - Used when colour is not a huge concern! Interim crowns and bridges provisional criteria 1. Pulpal and dentin protection! 2. Positional stability! 3. Occlusal function! 4. Access for oral hygiene! 5. Physiologic contours! 6. Accurate margins! 7. Aesthetics! 8. Removal! Custom provisional technique fabricating template a. Direct method: immediate - Preliminary impression is taken chair side before area is prepared! 1. Alginate material! 2. Putty class IV polyvinyl ! 3. Softened acrylic buttons! b. Indirect method: prior appointment - Preliminary impression is taken 1 week before preparation appointment ! - Gypsum cast is made! - Vacuum former is used! - Clear stent made of gypsum model! - Vacuum formed tray must be present prior to the dentist preparing the teeth! Always include one full tooth, mesial and distal!
