A Primary Source Quiz Thinking Like A Historian Title of primary source: Students may choose any ONE primary source to analyze from the textbook chapter “Manifest Destiny.” Title: Cherokee Petition Protesting Removal, 1836 Answer the following questions in complete sentences: 1. What type of primary source is it? This primary source is a petition.

2. What is the date or approximate date of the source and where was it created? This primary source was created in 1836.

3. Who is the author/creator of the source? The author is unknown but it said to be written by the Cherokee tribe’s leaders.

4. What was their intention for creating the source, and who was/were the intended audience(s)? What persons or groups were excluded? Their intentions for creating this source was to protest/petition the loss of their territory. This was written to the United States government so anyone who was not in the government would have been excluded.

5. What does it say? It says that the Cherokee people do not agree with how they have taken over their land. It also mentions that they expect a treaty or an agreement between them and the United States.

6. How might certain factors (e.g. fear of censorship, attempt to curry favor) affect the content, style, or tone of the document? I think the American way has influenced this entire document. The fact that an Indian tribe is writing a petition is proof of that. The tone and style are very formal.

7. What type of blind spots, biases, weaknesses, or assumptions might the author have that affects his/her/their argument or objective? I think there are some biases of the Cherokee leaders who are writing this. It is obvious that they feel entitled to this land since they lived on it before the Americans did.

8. How are you (the historian) reading this document differently than the intended audience would have read it? I think I am reading this today very differently than one would have back in this time period due to the fact that I understand that the Indians were completely taken advantage of. Many were killed and entire culture was ruined. I think back when

A Primary Source Quiz Thinking Like A Historian this was going on they had no regard for the consequences these actions would have many years from then.

9. Can you infer any effects or influences the document would have had in its own time? I think that even in that time frame the government would have been shocked that the Indians who they thought were savages, were writing so professionally/formally. From the reading I understand that diplomacy was important for some, but for others it was not.

10. What does the document tell you about the period you are studying? This document tells me that during this time, American settlers had no regard for which land they were taking. They did not care who they were affecting so long as it didn’t affect themselves....
