University of Phoenix Material Attention and Perception Worksheet Respond to the following questions in 100 to 150 words each. 1. What does the field of cognitive psychology study? Cognitive psychology studies mental processes which include learning and decision making. Cognitive psychology examines the internal process and how one might perceive the world around them. Cognitive psychologists may also work with neuroscientists to study brain functioning. The study is whether minds interpret reality, how individuals make decisions and how thoughts engage with language. General areas of research include perception, memory and thought processing. Cognitive psychologists study not only how we form memories, but also why our mind is the way it is. Cognitive psychologists study how normal perception changes from the viewpoint of people with certain psychological disorders. By studying these discrepancies, individuals in the profession hope to learn about normal perception and how to treat specific disorders (Robinson-Riegler, B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. 2017).

2. What is the process of attention? What is the purpose of attention in cognition? Attention is a theory studied in cognitive psychology that refers to how we actively process information in our environment. Attention is the behavioral and cognitive process of selectively focusing on data, whether considered subjective or objective while ignoring other information that can be perceived — our brains are in a state of arousal as we pay attention. Attention is limited as many distractions take place throughout a day. Attention is selective as so much information is around one must be careful on what needs attention. Attention is a primary function of our brains, and this is how people survive (Cherry, K. 2018). Attention is a complicated cognitive function which is vital for humans and their behavior. The skill is forever changing and is an external process for smell, sound, images, and internal thoughts (Cherry, K. 2018).

3. What concepts are involved in the process of perception? How does perception affect cognition? There are three concepts involved with perception. One is selection in which the brain cam examines information or decide what is useful knowledge and what is less important. Organization is the second concept in which data is used. Many reactions take place at once during this time in our brains. Neurons and receptors construct images, and this translates to perception. Interpretation is the last concept this is when our brains filter and interpret what information has been stored. Information is now understood and made into useful knowledge (Robinson-Riegler, B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. 2017). Perception is when specific information is captured and formed into sensible data. Perception is the process in which there would be catching of details that would be sensible for the brain. It helps us understand the information concerning our surroundings (RobinsonRiegler, B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. 2017).

4. Why is object recognition important? What processes take place to help us recognize objects and faces? What is the relationship between object recognition and perception? Humans recognize a face due in part to memory for faces in the past and some in part from shapes and sizes. The first phase consists of coding of the physical characteristics of the person we are watching. The second phase is based on encoding the identity of the person, which give us a signal that this is a person we know. Then, in the final third phase, we recognize the person (Robinson-Riegler, B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. 2017). Object recognition can recognize a face, object, person and so on by size, shape, and memories. The difference with perception is that if a person had a stroke or something to that nature, they might not recognize a person or object in the same way. To recognize we rely on memories or what has been learned when perception is our environment or how we perceive things around us (Robinson-Riegler, B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. 2017).
