If you have never logged in to Blackboard, click the “New to Blackboard?” link for instructions. Research Participation: There is a research participation requirement for this course. All students must participate in several credit-hours worth of psychology experiments. You also have the option of completing an alternative assignment (see slides on Blackboard for details). Failure to complete this requirement will result in a grade of Incomplete for the semester. The psychology department, not your instructor, dictates the requirement. Information about how to sign up for these experiments as well as information about the alternate assignment, should you choose not to participate in research, can be found on Blackboard under “Research Participation Info.” If you have questions regarding research participation you should contact the graduate assistant who coordinates subject pool by emailing: [email protected]. Both courses must be taken for a letter grade in order to receive the Gen Ed L; courses taken pass/fail cannot fulfill the Gen Ed L requirement.

PSYC 111.02 Syllabus p. 2 of 4 Course Description: This course introduces students to the field of psychology. Initial topics covered are research methods and theoretical frameworks. The course covers each of the major research areas in psychology. The physiological, cognitive, developmental, social and clinical perspectives are reviewed. The course is valuable not only to those interested in majoring in psychology, but also to those seeking a basic understanding of the field. Course Structure: Due to the large class size, this course will be taught in a lecture-style format. “Real world” examples and “special topics” will often be presented during class in order to facilitate the application of content from the readings to personal experiences and potential careers in psychology. Interactive learning opportunities will be presented in and out of class, as well. Please be aware that all information presented in class may be included on the exams. Also, all information in the book that isn’t covered during class lecture may also be on the exams. Course Expectations: 1. Students are expected to be responsible for their class performance: a. Students will attend all classes, as attendance is a requirement of this course. b. Students will attend review sessions and/or office hours as needed to clarify information from lecture, readings, or other assignments. c.

Students will contact teaching assistant or professor if a problem arises in order to resolve it before it becomes detrimental to their class performance. d. Students will complete all assignments, be present for all quizzes/tests, and will attain appropriate class materials and bring those needed for class regularly. PowerPoints will e.

NOT be made available on blackboard unless otherwise specified by professor. This course is a 4-credit course, which means that in addition to the scheduled lectures/discussions, students are expected to do at least 9.5 hours of course-related work each week during the semester. This includes things like completing assigned readings, studying for tests and examinations, and other tasks that must be completed to earn credit in the course.

2. Students are expected to be respectful in and out of class to one another, as well as toward the professor and teaching assistants: a.

Students will act professionally during class by providing the type of respect they would expect should they be the professor or teaching assistant (e.g., students will arrive on time and remain until the end of class, students will silence their phones, students will only speak during appropriate times).

b. Students will keep their correspondences with teaching assistant and professor outside of class professional (e.g., e-mail should include a proper greeting, appropriate language, limited to no slang terms, and an appropriate closing). c.

Students will demonstrate respect for other students in the classroom to maintain a pleasant, non-distracting, and cooperative learning environment. (e.g., students will not engage in activities, such as reading the newspaper, chatting, grooming, selfie-taking, tweeting, snapchatting, Instagramming, or Facebooking, etc. ).

3. Students are expected to uphold the Binghamton University Code of Student Conduct and the Binghamton University Student Academic Honesty Code. Dishonesty will not be tolerated.

Quizzes Exams Total possible points:

5 points each (x 5) = 25 points 50 points each (x3) = 150 points 200 points

Brief Video Presentation: Students will be assigned to a presentation group of 6 students. Video presentations will be no more than 2 minutes in length. Your group will be responsible for creating a video presentation to help all students learn and remember a topic which will be assigned. Detailed rubric will be available on blackboard. Presentation will be worth 20 points. Participation: Throughout the course students will be given opportunities to participate in interactive learning assignments and classwork. Opportunities to participate will be presented during class. A total of 5 participation points can be achieved. Quizzes: There will be seven (7) unannounced quizzes given throughout the semester to check for understanding of course content. These quizzes will take place during class and format may vary. Each quiz will be worth 5 points. The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped. Therefore, there will be no make-up quizzes. Exams: There will be two 50-point exams given during the semester. Exams will be multiplechoice format. Exams will cover specific topics and class content (which may not be addressed in the book), and will not be cumulative in nature. There will be no make-up exams. A missed exam will result in a zero. Final Exam: A 50-point final exam will occur at the end of the semester. This exam will be cumulative, multiple choice, and include topics addressed throughout the course, as well as class content (which may not be addressed in the book). DATE/TIME TBA. Bonus: There will be ONE bonus opportunity available during the semester. It is completely optional. No other extra credit or bonus will be offered. Please stay tuned. Details will be reviewed during class. All grades are final and are based on the points you earned. They are non-negotiable. I will not change grades or provide extra opportunities to make-up work or complete extra credit.
