Is IQ determined by genetics...

Description

PSYC 1504 Is IQ determined by genetics? According to the textbook (OpenStax College, 2017), Arthur Jensen (1969) concluded that "IQ is determined by genetics." Also, the textbook introduces the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart that "researchers found that identical twins raised together and identical twins raised apart exhibit a higher correlation between their IQ scores than siblings or fraternal twins raised together (Bouchard, Lykken, McGue, Segal, & Tellegen, 1990). If so, should I say to people with low IQs that it is because of your gene and your intelligence cannot be improved? I can not say because I think there is more factor to the intelligence determination. IQ test people whether they have some abilities such as language skills, pattern recognition skills, visual perception skills, mathematical skills, logical reasoning skills, spatial reasoning skills, and classification skills. And they earn a score called an intelligence quotient (IQ) as a level of having intelligence. Terman (1925) classified the followings and iqcomparisonsite.com (2006) show us that there are 25% of the people are in the below classification. IQ score Classification 80-90 Dullness 70-80 Borderline deficiency Below 70 Definite feeble-mindedness Then, how can we say to the people who have intellectual disabilities, who have low IQ students? When I was a student, I was shocked at my IQ score, and I thought, if yes, in what ways, can my score be increased. I found the answer to this question in the textbook (OpenStax College, 2017). It is "although genetics seem to be in control of the level of intelligence, the environmental influences provide both stability and change to trigger the manifestation of cognitive abilities" (Bartels, Rietveld, Van Baal, & Boomsma, 2002). Consequently, it seems to be saying that there is an intellectual capacity in each person to use it and it can be passed on to the next generation. For most of the babies, learning a language is natural and babies are born with the ability to learn it. This is an intellectual capacity. All children, no matter which language their parents speak, learn a language in the same way. However, they need to use it to their fullest potential, ar this time, there are areas where the environment can affect. Using it with their fullest potential means using best efforts. No average man can have the same intellectual abilities as Einstein have. However, environmental effects or fullest potential such as maximizing memory or removing the pain in our environment and increasing happiness will make us go into a high IQ range.
