PSYC 340 (Section 51) Fundamentals of Psychopathology Fall 2020 Syllabus Thursdays 18:00-20:30
Instructor: Elmira Ismaylova, Ph.D. Email: [email protected] Course description: The course was designed to introduce you to the concepts, theory, and issues of abnormal psychology. You will be presented with the major disorders of the DSM-5 classification system. The topics will be reviewed within the main theoretical (e.g. psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, cognitive-behavioral) frameworks as well as from various biological, psychological, and socio-cultural standpoints. Major models of assessment, diagnosis, etiology, and treatment will be surveyed. Relevant research paradigms will also be discussed. Please note that there is no mandatory textbook required. You are responsible for all material discussed during lectures, including videos and relevant empirical studies. Course evaluations: There will be three non-cumulative exams consisting in multiplechoice and true-or-false questions, with each exam worth mark. There will be no final cumulative exam.

Furthermore, if you choose to continue on in Psychology, you may one day be carrying out your own research as part of an undergraduate honors thesis, research internship, or research project. Consequently, you may enjoy talking to more senior students in the Psychology program, either upper year undergraduate students, graduate students, or research interns/assistants. You can earn 0.5 participation credit per hour for online studies. Each participation credit is worth 0.5% towards your final grade. In this course you will be allowed to earn up to 2 participation credits. This means that you can earn up to 1% bonus mark through participation.
