PSYCH 600 PHYSICAL CHANGES IN MIDDLE ADULTHOOD LECTURE NOTES WEEK 5 There are so many physical changes that occur in the body during middle adulthood. Most people at this stage are in need of reading glasses. Presbyopia sets in around the stage of life and causes the lens to lose its capacity to adjust to objects at varying distances and the ability to read small print. The hearing during this stage of life also has its own onset called presbycus it is more rapid in men than women. some at this age are sensitive to loud noises and my need hearing aids to assist with the ability to hear clearly. The skin at this time layers begin to thin out and cause the skin to be wrinkled and flabby. Muscle -fat makeup fat gain in torso men in the upper abdomen and back area. Most women in the waist and upper arms but can be controlled if diet and exercise are consistent. The skeleton the minerals in the body start to decline making injury a high risk for middle adulthood. At this time fractures and injuries do not heal as the did during previous stages of life. Berk (2014) describes several physical changes occurring during normal development throughout middle adulthood. These changes include vision, hearing, skin, muscle ratio, and skeletal changes. Vision changes include a diminished ability to change focus from objects at a distance and objects nearby. Vision changes also include a diminished ability to see in low light situations, and diminishment of color differentiation ability. Hearing changes include a general deterioration of hearing ability, due to decreased sensitivity of inner-ear structures and decreased cognitive ability to process sound. Skin changes include the addition of wrinkles, loosening of the skin, and the tendency for skin to dry out. This has to do with how the three layers of skin attach to one another. Berk (2014) also explains that middle adulthood represents a time when many add body fat and loose lean body mass. She suggests that resistance training can help minimize the loss of lean body mass. Finally, skeletal changes include a broadening of bones countered by development of a more porous structure. Loss of bone density can lead to an increased likelihood of broken bones under normal conditions. The physical changes that happens though middle adulthood, your vision is effect, you start to need reading glasses, if you think you have perfect vision. I wanted to get the surgery for my eyes, and my doctor advise me that my eyes are going to wear with age, that if though I get the exam, i will eventually need reading glasses. The other physical changes is you start getting gray hair, you may get wrinkles in your face and definitely your bones start aching. When I reached the age of 50, I notice a lot of physical changes to my body. My gray hair was growing rapidly, my doctor put me on medication, then I have to start taking all these test, such as colonoscopy and bone density test. Aging speeds up during middle adulthood and could be characterized by decline in vision, hearing, and immune-system functioning, as well as the end of reproductive capability for women, known as menopause. The eyes lose their ability to adjust to objects at varying distances. 14 percent of middle-aged individuals have hearing problems. Skin continues to dry out and is susceptible to more wrinkles.

As each of you described the physical changes in connection to middle adulthood. Berk (2014) described when first noticing presbyopia affecting one's near vision at around age 40, they may be able to compensate by holding their reading material farther away. But presbyopia worsens as you age, and you will need vision correction at some point. Besides the structural changes in the eye, there are also neural changes occurring in the visual system as well. For example, glaucoma is relatively common, especially in older adults and can cause damage to the optic nerve if left untreated. Glaucoma is said to affect around 2% of people over the age of 40, and more often more women than men (Berk, 2014). Once midlife occurs so should regular eye exams that include glaucoma test. This disease can be hereditary with families and lead to blindness. Physical changes that happen during middle adulthood are: with vision that your eyes can't focus on objects that are in the distance like they one did so you will need to start to wear glasses. your hearing starts to decline. Hearing loss may be hereditary and some environmental factors may be the cause of it. As we age our skin begins to sag and wrinkles start to form. At middle adulthood we also gain weight, men tend to gain in their upper abdomen as women gain at their waist. Bone density starts to decrease during middle adulthood. During this time your intake of vitamin D and calcium should increase Physical changes that we all go through during middle adulthood include but are not limited to, a decline in the major organs, including the lungs, heart and digestive system; additionally, women undergo menopause sometime between the ages of 42 and 51. Also gray and thinning hair, wrinkles on skin, the need for reading and bifocal eyeglasses. There is also muscle loss, and skeletal changes where bones start to become weaker leading to easier breaks. These changes are called primary changes that happens to all people regardless of race, ethnicity, culture or socioeconomic class. There is also secondary aging that is caused by unhealthy behaviors from drug use, unhealthy eating, and alcohol abuse. Physical changes that occur during middle adulthood include a loss of vision and hearing, skin beginning to sag, bones beginning to deteriorate, and weight gain becomes an issue. Any combination of these issues can cause a person to feel "older".The most noticeable physical change I have noticed as I enter middle age is not only weight gain but difficulty in losing weight which can be attributed to a slow down of metabolism. I've worn glasses since I was eleven, and had cataract surgery when I was 28 so while I can tell my eyes are getting worse, it has not been a big deal to me. However, the weight gain and the difficulties it has imposed on me, such as not being able to move as fast and being tired all the time, has been a major adjustment for me. choices and a contracting future as kids leave home and profession ways turn out to be more decided. In different ways, middle age is difficult to characterize on the grounds that wide varieties in demeanors and practices exist. A few people appear to be physically and rationally youthful at age 65--dynamic and idealistic, with a feeling of tranquility and soundness. Others feel old at age 40--as though their lives had crested and were on a declining course.

Another reason center adulthood escapes definition is that it is a contemporary marvel. Prior to the twentieth century, just a short interim isolated the assignments of early adulthood from those of maturity. Ladies were frequently dowagers by their mid-fifties, previously their most youthful youngster left home. What's more, brutal living conditions drove individuals to acknowledge a desolated body as a characteristic piece of life. As future--and, with it, wellbeing and energy-expanded over the previous century, grown-ups turned out to be more mindful of their own maturing and mortality....
