Description

Developmental Research PSYCH/610 Version 2

University of Phoenix Material Developmental Research Imagine that your Learning Team has received funding to study changes in sexual attitudes over time. Your task is to design a developmental research study to investigate this issue. Your team will outline one of the following: cross-sectional study, longitudinal study or sequential study. Identify which type of design your team decided to use and explain why you decided on this method. Complete the table below and submit it to your instructor.

Type of design (crosssectional, longitudinal or sequential) and rational for selecting this type of design

Being assigned a study to examine changes in sexual attitudes over time, there are a few approaches to create a clear, concise and organized proposal. One must first understand the type of design to best suit the research needed. A longitudinal study would best fit this request. This method can be defined as utilizing the same group or population for the study to be observed at different points in time as they grow older (Cozby & Bates, 2017). The rationale behind this strategy will be to determine different attitudes throughout one’s life. This can help identify certain effects for future studies as well. One item in which will be important to note are any present cohort effects, or any type of bias in which may impact these groups of people to determine what external factors can also impact them (Cozby & Bates, 2017). As an example, those born from a time period, or apart of a certain culture may not be comfortable in discussing sexual attitudes, as they may be considered taboo. It will be important to have a diversified participant group. Another option to consider will be the usage of multiple participant groups and to follow them through different age groups (i.e. 20-30’s, 30-40’s, etc.), and see if there are any additional results.

Propose a research hypothesis and a null hypothesis.

The research hypothesis predictors of men and women regarding sexual activity. The null hypothesis would be the frequency in which sexual activity occurs amongst the purpose.

Who will your participants be? How will you recruit them? What concerns do you have in selecting your participants? How do you know your participants are representative of the population?

We will use the middle age group for this research study. The ages will be ages 31-45. Many men continue to have a strong sex drive through these years, though testosterone starts to slowly decrease around age 35 (DeSarkissian, 2021). For women during this time frame is when their sex drive is the strongest as well. To recruit we will utilize our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn). Social media is a great platform to advertise and recruit. Concerns that may arise will be the participant’s engagement in this research study. I also would want to try and have the participants that is diverse, and a pretty good amount of men and women. Having enough participants to carry out this research is very important. I will determine my participants being a part of the population by gender, ethnicity, and different characteristics. Our participants will

be just a smaller group of the larger population. Describe the research method. What will you do? What instruments will you use to measure sexual attitudes?

The research method used will be the longitudinal method since we are studying changes in sexual attitudes over time. It is a less preferred method because of the amount of time it takes to gather the data, however, it is suitable for the given study. The participants in a longitudinal method are interviewed many times throughout the duration of the study (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Questionnaires can be used to measure the changes in sexual attitudes rather quickly. Questionnaires are straightforward; they consist of questions that are written down for the participants of the study to answer (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Longitudinal studies tend to be expensive since they are continued for a long period of time. Gathering data by means of questionnaires will minimize added costs to the study, since they are cheaper to complete than interviews (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Questionnaires also allow for anonymity from the participants which can increase the likelihood of honesty and can be given through a variety of ways like the mail or Internet (Cozby & Bates, 2012).

Identify your independent and dependent variables

The assigned study is correlational in method. The study is considered casual, therefore there is no independent or dependent variable to be manipulated with cause-and-effect results as in an experimentational method design. The sexual attitudes of men and women with results being descriptive in nature (Pressbooks, n.d.).

How will you analyze your data? Propose at least one statistical test that you might use.

The way this study will be analyzed is through a longitudinal study. During this study, the research design involved following the same group of people over a period to see if they change. In this case it is in reference to the male and female attitude towards sex. In order to collect the data, we must test our hypothesis.

Imagine that your results are consistent with your research hypothesis. What does this mean? How might this information be helpful to others?

If our results are consistent with the hypothesis then this would mean that we were correct on what the sexual attitudes are for men and women. This information would be helpful for anyone trying to research sexual attitudes.
