**Undergraduate TAs are available during office hours or by appointment to assist you in understanding material. Course Time & Location: PSYC 111-02: Tuesday & Thursday 1:15-2:40pm in Lecture Hall 1 Textbook: The textbook for this course is by Wayne Weiten entitled, Psychology: Themes and Variations, 10th edition, 2017. Cengage (the publisher) offers a fully integrated eBook with associated online exercises and study modules through a program called MindTap. Exercises through MindTap are self-paced and optional. You have two options for acquiring the text: (1) Buy Cengage Unlimited access, which gives you electronic access to all textbooks the publisher offers, with the option to rent a hard copy of the textbook for an additional $8; or (2) buy a hard copy of the textbook. BrightSpace: Course materials, announcements, quiz and exam schedules and grades will be managed using BrightSpace, which is available through your MyBinghamton account. Your PODS username and password will give you access. Gen Ed Requirement: In order to meet the Gen Ed Laboratory Science (L) requirement, students must take both PSYC 111 and 112 for a letter grade. Courses taken pass/fail cannot fulfill the Gen Ed L requirement. Expectations: This course is a 4-credit course, which means that in addition to the scheduled meeting times, students are expected to do at least 9.5 hours of course-related work outside of class each week during the semester. This includes time spent completing assigned readings, participating in lab/review sessions, studying for tests and examinations, preparing written assignments, and other course-related tasks. Learning Objectives: The central goal of this course is to provide a broad overview and a rich understanding of Psychology as a discipline. In this sense, we will spend the better part of a week covering nearly every chapter of the Weiten text, each of which provides a detailed overview of a specific area of Psychology. More specific learning objectives are provided on a chapter-by-chapter basis in the Lecture Outlines posted on BrightSpace. For best practices in studying for this course, see the document “How to Study” which is posted on BrightSpace as well.

Grading: Any material covered in your text in the assigned chapters is fair game for exam questions. I will not cover everything in your text, so it is imperative that you read the assigned chapters. Likewise, I will frequently cover material that cannot be found in your text. This is also fair game for testing. Hence, I strongly encourage you to attend this class and read the textbook. Automated Quizzes: A total of 12 automated quizzes will be administered through BrightSpace. Quizzes will become available at 3:00pm (noon) on Thursday and will be available for 24 hours (i.e., until 3:00pm Friday) of the appointed week and will cover material since the last quiz or exam. Quizzes will be comprised of 25 multiple choice/true-and-false questions. Once you login and initiate a quiz, you will have 30 min to complete it. You may NOT re-start or repeat a quiz. You may skip or miss a maximum of two quizzes without penalty, but these will be quizzes that are dropped. At the end of the semester, the overall quiz average will be calculated by summing the highest 10 quiz grades and dividing by 250, then converted to an overall Quiz Average. Thus, weekly quizzes will count (roughly) the equivalent of an exam (see Table below). In-Class Exams: Exams will be given in class and you must present a valid photo ID card (Drivers License, Binghamton University ID, Passport, etc) on each exam day in order to take the exam. All exams will be multiple choice or True/False questions and each question will count for one point. The first 3 exams will have 75 questions each; the final exam will have 100 questions. At the end of the semester, your lowest Exam grade will be dropped. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS: if you miss an exam, this is the exam that will be dropped. The cumulative final exam is required for the course and CANNOT be dropped. Final Grading: Final grades will be calculated as follows, using a typical 90-80-70-60 grading scale for letter grade cut-offs. Plus and minus will be utilized in accordance with Harpur College grading policies. Thus, the total points possible for this course is 350 (3 exams @ 75 pts each + 100 pts for final exam + 100 pts for Quiz average = 425 points, less 75 pts for dropped exam = 350). “Extra Credit” will not be given under any circumstances. Exam 1 75 Exam 2 75 Exam 3 75 (lowest of first 3 exams will be dropped, subtract 75) Quiz Average 100 (based on 10 highest quiz grades, converted to %) Final Exam 100 Total points possible 425 - 75= 350 possible points Research Participation: There is a research participation requirement for this course. All students must participate in 5 credit hours of psychology experiments. Some experiments are conducted in laboratories in the Psychology Department, whereas others will be online studies overseen by faculty members in Psychology. You can sign up for experiments at: https://binghamton.sona-systems.com/. Each experiment will be accompanied by a description of the study and a general sense of what would be involved if you participate. You also have the option of completing an alternative assignment if you don’t wish to participate in research studies. Failure to complete this requirement will result in a grade of Incomplete for the semester. I encourage you to sign up for experiments early in the semester rather than scrambling at the end. A detailed description of these requirements will be provided in class and in BrightSpace. This research requirement is dictated by the Psychology Department, not your instructor. ALL QUESTIONS REGARDING RESEARCH PARTICIPATION CREDIT SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO . Other Policy Issues: 1. Because there are 400+ students in this class, please direct all questions to the graduate TAs by email (address above). If they cannot answer your questions, they will forward your email to me. I strongly prefer email correspondence instead of phone calls and typically respond within 24 hr when possible. 2. Academic Dishonesty (i.e., cheating) will not be tolerated. Harpur College guidelines for Academic Honesty will be enforced to the maximum extent possible. 3. Please be courteous to your fellow students – show up on time, prepare for class by reading assigned materials beforehand and turn off your cell phones. Disruptions will be dealt with accordingly.

4. If you wish to dispute a question on any exam (and thus your grade for that exam), you must do so within 10 business days of receiving your grade for that exam. To review your exam, you may attend office hours for the Graduate TAs listed earlier on this syllabus (i.e., Dr. Deak does NOT have individual exams in his office). 5. If you have a disability, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can make accommodations for whatever special needs you may have. A letter from the office for Students with Disabilities will be required. Because of the logistics for administering exams in a large course like this, we need 3-5 business days to arrange accommodations for an exam, so please get these in place early. 6. As a matter of policy, I will not provide my power point presentations to anyone under any circumstances. On BrightSpace, you will find a set of Learning Objectives and a Lecture Outline for each Chapter we will cover. The file is in MS Word that can be downloaded and used for your planning purposes. In addition to providing useful direction for the structure of lectures, these outlines also provide an easy-to-use document for taking notes in lecture if you so choose. If you miss a lecture, please find a buddy in class who is willing to share their notes. 7. Under no circumstances are photographs or videos to be taken during lectures. No portion of lectures can be audio or video recorded without prior written consent from the instructor. Use of electronic devices must be restricted solely for taking notes unless you have an approved accommodation through the SSD office. 8. Sharing course notes/materials or selling such materials for profit is strictly prohibited by Binghamton University and will be regarded as a violation of Academic Honesty.
