3 Psychological Viewpoint of Forrest Gump

During the duration of the movie Forrest Gump, you see Forrest grow from a little boy being the age of around five years old to his mid-thirties. It isn’t until his mother wants him to attend regular public school that people started to call him “slow” because of his low IQ. His mother always knew he was different but she always wanted him to know that he was normal. Forrests’ IQ Forrests mother always knew that he was a little different but she done her best to make him feel normal and she wanted everyone else to think he was too. When it came time for Forrest to attend school his mother took him to the public school where she found out by the principle that Forrests’ IQ (intelligence quotient) was 75. According to the DSM-IV it is possible to diagnose mental retardation in individuals with IQ’s between 70 and 75. Even though Forrest had a low IQ he was still able to succeed in many different things. Physical Capabilities1 With Forrest having an IQ of 75, surprisingly he was still very physically capable. He was strong, healthy and extremely athletic. He got a scholarship to play college football at the University of Alabama and after he graduated he went into the military. He then was drafted in the Vietnam war. He received the highest award in the military, which was the Metal of Honor. He was able to save most of his platoon including his lieutenant. After saving his fellow platoon members he was shot in the butt and he was sent to the hospital where he picked up ping pong. He became a professional ping pong player. Motor Skills. Since Forrest was a little boy he was known as “slow,” and it was continued into his adult years. Even though Forrest is considered “slow” he still experiences normal emotions such as sadness, love, nervousness, hate and so on. According to DSM-IV, people who are mentally retarded have motor problems. Though throughout the movie, Forrest keeps getting more and more athletic. Which means the movie was inconsistent with the characteristics of mental retardation. The DSMI-IV also says that people who are mentally handicapped lack social skills. Which means Forrest was unable to pick up on social cues. For

example, when Forrests mom has sex with the public schools’ principle, he does not understand what sex is or why it even happens. He also does not pick up on his feelings for Jenny. He is also verbally impaired, which means he stutters when he tries talking to other people and he stutters throughout the movie telling all of his stories.
