Please see the course schedule for due dates for completing readings and watching the lecture videos. Course Description: Introduction to the study of human individuality, personality, and social psychological processes. Some aspects of normal and abnormal human development, psychological assessment and treatment may be reviewed. Fulfillment of the ¼ laboratory credit typically entails serving as a research participant but can be fulfilled through the completion of alternative assignments. [Faculty of Arts] Course Prerequisites: PSYCO 104 or SCI 100. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they have the appropriate prerequisite for the course. If a student has any questions or concerns about these requirements/recommendations, it is highly recommended that they contact the instructor at the beginning of term. Course Objectives and Expected Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Identify and describe some key theories in the core areas of psychology, (2) Interpret, critically evaluate, and compare scientific research on human behavior and classic theories in psychology, and (3) Apply the findings from the research literature to experiences from your daily life.

2 Required Textbook: We will be using Top Hat (www.tophat.com) to access the digital interactive textbook, “Introduction to Psychology” ISBN: 9781773300955, that we will be using in this class. For instructions on how to create a Top Hat account and enrol in our Top Hat course, please refer to the invitation sent to your school email address or consult Top Hat's Getting Started Guide (https://bit.ly/31TGMlw). If you already have a Top Hat account, go to https://app.tophat.com/e/399959/ to be taken directly to our course. If you are new to Top Hat, follow the link in the email invitation you received, or go to https://app.tophat.com/register/student, click "Search by school" and input University of Alberta, and then search for our course with the following join code: 399959. The cost of the textbook is $ 45 and will be applied at checkout when enrolling in our Top Hat course. Bear in mind that textbook material will be made available in our course throughout the semester, so do not panic if you only see the first few modules of the course upon entry. You are expected to have read each chapter and complete the reading questions and homework in Top Hat before each lecture. Lectures are meant to clarify and enrich your knowledge of the given topic. There is not sufficient time to cover everything that was read in the chapter in the lecture videos, however you are still responsible for this material on exams. Materials presented during lectures are meant to expand your understanding and generate interest in the topics. All materials from lectures (including lecture videos, YouTube Breaks, supplementary videos, guest lectures, and other educational materials) can and may be on exams even if the material is not covered in the textbook.

Grade Evaluation: Quizzes and assignments will be marked in terms of your percentage correct. The final grade will be computed according to the University of Alberta letter grading system and will be based upon your relative standing in class. That being said, a mark of at least 50% is typically required for a passing grade. The table below contains an approximate guideline for the course, however the instructor reserves the right to adjust this table and assign appropriate grades based on relative performance. Cutoffs may be adjusted so that the proportion of students receiving each letter grade corresponds to the University-suggested ranges, depending on class performance and clustering of scores, and will reflect your performance in relation to the rest of the class.
