All the online sessions will be synchronous except review sessions for the midterm and final exams. Course Information ECON 102-02 Introduction to Microeconomics Class number: 43438 Semester: Fall 2020 Credit: 3 Overview of the Course How decisions are made by the consumer and producer sectors of the economy and the interactions between the two sectors. The process of resource allocation and income distribution within a free enterprise economy, as well as, alternative market structures such as monopoly, oligopoly, and monopolistic competition; and the effects of various government policies on the allocation of resources and the distribution of income. Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: • Use supply and demand analysis to predict or evaluate the effects of government policies or other events on society’s allocation of resources. • Show how the production and pricing decisions of firms depend on costs and the degree of competition faced by firms. • Compare and contrast the performance of various market structures ranging from perfect competition to monopoly. • Illustrate the welfare loss resulting from market failures such as externalities, and evaluate government policies to address those failures.

Required Textbook “Modern Principles of Microeconomics, by Tyler Cowen and Alex, Tabarrok Fourth Edition, 2018. It is very important that you read the book. Required Companion Platform - LaunchPad You need to purchase access to LaunchPad, a learning management system that provides access to learning resources specific to the course and the textbook. On a weekly basis you will have to complete homework assignments using LaunchPad. 1

The student registration instructions for Sapling Learning are provided from page 5 of this syllabus. Grading Policy The final grade for the course will be based on the performance on exams, problem sets and class participation (in-class questions): Class Participation Homeworks

If you miss an exam and fail to provide valid written justification your grade in that exam will be zero Classes Regular class meetings for the course will be composed of lectures, exams. Lectures will cover new material and follow the structure of the main text book. Exams will evaluate your knowledge of the course materials.

Problem Sets There will be a problem set for each chapter covered. Problem sets are a great learning tool of the course material and their weight in the final grade is 20%. They will be found in LaunchPad after each lecture along with the deadline for submission. Academic Honesty I take cheating extremely seriously. Cheating on an exam earns you an immediate F for the class and a referral to the VP for Student Affairs. Students with Disabilities Students with disabilities are encouraged to see me early. I will work with the Queens College Office of Special Services in Kiely 171 (718-997-5870) to address special needs. Communication Do not hesitate to ask questions in class if you have doubts.
