Description

READING ANALYSIS 4 You must turn in Response Papers for 4 of the 11 eligible response question assignments (designated by RA1-RA11). The purpose of Response Papers is to expose you to a range of Sociological research topics and to get you to think about how they connect to your own located biography. These assignments are also meant to encourage you to read the course materials. You may download this template and use the space provided, or if you take out the instructions you need to stay in a 1.5-2 page length. Part 1. Summary 1: Choose a reading assigned this week (or the previous week)- Check the syllabus—and provide a comprehensive summary. Explain the main findings, back up your claims with at least two citations from the reading (Author, page. Number). (1 full paragraph) “Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia: The Development of Deviant Identities” by Penelope A. McLorg and Diane E. Taub explores the relationship between eating disorders and deviance in order to eventually understand how those behaviors are labeled as deviant. According to the article, at first those struggling with eating disorders did not view themselves as deviant until those in their environment saw them as such. In fact, these people were praised as their eating disorders allowed them to achieve a societal beauty standard with people around them stating that they had a “new ‘sleekness’ and ‘good looks’” (McLorg & Taub, 247). The authors found that these ideas followed a pattern of primary then secondary deviance, with primary deviance exploring how people experience a “period of norm violations which do not affect an individual’s self-concept or performance of social roles” (McLorg & Taub, 247). The authors continue to explain how even when participants were eventually labeled as deviant, they continued their previous behaviors accepting them as normal following a pattern of secondary deviance.

Summary 2: Summary 1: Choose a reading assigned this week (or the previous week)- Check the syllabus—and provide a comprehensive summary. Explain the main findings, back up your claims with at least two citations from the reading (Author, page number). (1 full paragraph) The article “On Being Sane in Insane Places” by David L. Rosenhan, the consequences of the labels “sane” and “insane” and social deviance are explored through an experiment in which eight “sane” people become patients at a psychiatric hospital. At first, in order to be admitted, these “sane” people had to act “insane”, however once admitted, ceased these

actions in favor of their normal “sane” behavior. One of the things Rosenhan found was that no matter how “normal” these pseudopatients acted, their previous label of being “insane” stuck. According to Rosenhan, “…each was discharged with a diagnosis of schizophrenia ‘in remission’” (Rosenhan, 233). Rosenhan attributed these diagnoses to a failure in detecting sanity due to physicians’ tendencies to operate on a false positive bias, calling healthy people sick, a practice Rosenhan understands for general medicine but criticizes in the field of psychiatry due to the stickiness of mental illness labels. According to Rosenhan, “Once a person is designated abnormal, all of his other behaviors and characteristics are colored by that label,” (Rosenhan, 235). A situation Rosenhan condemns as it welcomes an abundance of unnecessary consequences that can cause severe damage. Part 2. An analytical response to the question posed. (1 -2 paragraph) with references (Author, page number) to specific course material (be sure to cite accurately). An analytical response means that this is not merely your opinion, but it is an informed critique of the information posed. Reading Analysis 4: Question: Explain what sociologists mean when they say the idea of what is or is not normal in society is SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED (explain and define what this means) CITE THE TEXT WHEN DEFINING KEY TERMS). In other words, how is deviance socially constructed? Give an example of something we as a society might consider deviant, but a different society, or a different context/time period, might not (try to use examples we did NOT cover in class). Using the sociological imagination, analyze how the example you provided was shaped and affected by history varying social structures, and by who holds power/prevails in society. Be sure to cite the readings directly. When sociologists say that normality in society is socially constructed, they mean that people create the rules and get to decide what is normal. This situation is easily seen by the changing standards of society, for example it was normal & expected for women to be housewives and take care of the domestic part of the life, however with the rising cost of living and expanding opportunities for women, being a housewife is now, generally, a personal choice rather than an expectation. Consequently, with normality comes deviance, which according to the textbook is “any action, belief, or human characteristic that is considered a violation of group norms by a large number of members of a society,” (Murphy & Ritzer, 144). For example, at one point divorce and divorcees were considered deviant and often ostracized by their communities, many times under the influence of religion and the belief that divorce was immoral. One of the biggest debates of divorce arose when England’s Henry VIII created the Church of England to get his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled in the 16th century as Roman Catholicism, specifically the Pope at the time, condemned these

actions. However now, in many countries divorce is just seen as a normal part of life due to new laws being created that made divorce easier and more accessible for the public. Now it is not uncommon to know a person who has been divorced or had their marriage annulled at least in Western countries like the United States. However, this does not mean that the stigma of divorce has disappeared entirely. According to the textbook, stigma is “a person’s characteristic that others find, define, and often label as unusual, unpleasant, or deviant” (Murphy & Ritzer, 155), so although it is completely normal for people to get divorce at one point there will always be people who criticize divorcees and especially those who get divorced multiple times. There are still populations of religious/traditional people who will see divorce as sinful and frankly there is not much one can do about those groups.
