Reading Checkpoint #1 Chapter 2: Try It, Apply It

Professor Brown HSA 6185 Florida International University

During interviews, HCO leaders are constantly stating how hospital mergers can result in substantial benefits. For instance, mergers can decrease costs and improvements in overall quality. The actual reasons behind these mergers, however, are not always directly outlined to the community. Some pressures behind the reason as to why more mergers are taking place include a tight labor market, rising drug prices, and declining reimbursements from Medicare and other commercial insurers (Gooch, 2019). If I were managing a social media consulting company for HCOs and I found myself in a situation where I had to merge with a similar business, I would use several of Mintzberg’s managerial roles to help me along the way to ensure success to the resulting consulting company. With Mintzberg’s roles, they are grouped into three groups: interpersonal, informational, and decisional (Olden, 2019). Though grouped into different categories, they are all interrelated and important for a manager to keep in mind when making significant decisions. Managers must know how to handle several roles at once. The entrepreneur role should be one of the most important when it comes to a manager helping their organization merge with another. This is when the manager knows how to readily change and adapt to the other organization in a beneficial manner (Olden, 2019). In doing so, the manager will be able to work towards improving the new company. It is under the decisional category, in which the manager will be responsible for making choices that further advance the organization after a recent merger. When it comes to my social media consulting company merging with the other one, this role will help me better adjust to the new organization’s workflow and strategic plans. Once I find myself fully accustomed, I will take what I have learned to improve the HCO. The negotiator is another role within the decisional category that will be important when two companies are coming together (Olden, 2019). Coming from one organization to the other,

there are many factors in play that will be the basis of either success of failure. For instance, I must be able to know how to work together with leaders from the other company when it comes to agreeing on the employees’ wages. We will also need to reach arrangements on employee schedules, the workflow, and conflictual situations, and more. By being an efficient negotiator in the company, I will be able to assist the merge of the two organizations in being smoother. The figurehead role will be crucial in representing the new social media consulting company for the HCO. With this role, the manager should be present at the social and ceremonial events that take place on behalf of their organization (Olden, 2019). For instance, once both social media consulting companies have merged and the new company is announced, I will be there at the proclamation service to represent our team and goals. Figurehead is under the interpersonal type of managerial role, which is very important for a manager to maintain. It allows the employees and community surrounding the new organization to see that the managers genuinely care about how the company moves forward and succeeds. The leader role is imperative to preserve, as it involves motivating and overseeing the employees (Olden, 2019). By taking over this role, I will ensure that our employees will reach their goals and stay on top of their training. Especially during a merger, it is no surprise that the employees from both organizations will be doubtful and concerned about their future in the new company. By being a strong leader to them, I can help them understand how they can best go forward in this organization to ensure their success. I will assist them in doing the best they can to get adjusted to the new process and accomplish the company’s objectives. The disseminator role is useful as it allows for information to be shared from both organizations (Olden, 2019). For instance, from my social media consulting company, I will be sure to share the titles of all employees involved in the new organization, as well as the roles and

responsibilities of the administration team. This helps to prevent any confusion as to what each person has to do for the new company. All team members will be on the same page about their duties, as well as the workflow and values of the organization. Keeping the company’s intranet up to date is also important; there will be working links to all different areas of the company, essential contacts, rulebooks, guides, training modules, and more.
