Description

Sections 7.1-7.3, 6.7-6.8, 6.10 Chapter 7 Skills (Learning Objectives on Blackboard): 1-3 End-of-Chapter Problems: 30, 32-47, 53-54 from chapter six and 36 from chapter seven Sections 6.7, 7.1 and 7.2 go together. Section 6.7 describes nucleophiles and electrophiles. We have previously introduced these terms but we will be developing our understanding of them for the next several chapters. The concept of polarizability is an important consideration when describing nucleophile strength; this will be important when determining the mechanism of the substitution reactions that result from the reaction of a nucleophile and an electrophile introduced in section 7.1. Alkyl halides are common electrophiles in these reactions and they are described in section 7.2. Sections 6.8, 6.10 and 7.3 go together. The most important of these is section 7.3 where the possible mechanisms of substitution reactions are considered. Section 6.8 and 6.10 provide some background information about writing ionic mechanisms – in section 6.8 you only need to read about the first two steps (nucleophilic attack and loss of a leaving group) for now. It is very important to become comfortable drawing curved arrows in reaction mechanisms. We will be looking at reactions that occur via either concerted or step-wise processes and a good understanding of these mechanisms is essential to predicting the products of these reactions. I recommend the following videos (these have explicit links in Blackboard): Nucleophile/Electrophile and the Schwartz Rules (9:25) – pairs with section 6.7 Essential Viewing – Khan Academy This video identifies the 5 major concepts that you must master to do well in organic chemistry Alkyl Halide Nomenclature (10:11) – pairs with section 7.2 Recommended Viewing – Khan Academy In addition to providing several good nomenclature examples, this video also reviews the classification of alkyl halides as primary, secondary or tertiary....
