The Californian Ideology - The new ideology represents a fusion of hippies and entrepreneur/nerds - ideology of the early web and set of attitudes, beliefs of users involved during this period Californian Ideology - Barbrook term/criticism for the fusion of capitalist entrepreneurs & countercultural ideals. It combines the belief that power of the individual + faith in the free market to solve inequalities. - Two contradictory versions of liberalism. Free wheeling hippies + entrepreneurial zeal of yuppies. - Reconciles the former’s commune/anarchy with the latter’s techno-libertarian/free market - Increased blending of both cultures - Hippy-shunned organization give way to a “virtual class” - Hippy-leaning artists, writers, and programmers - Class is becoming more powerful and able to demand very favorable/relaxed working conditions - Democratization of media - Supposed to be massive forces of good but hasn't materialized - Capitalism using it - but creatives are brought while suppressing the change - BoBos - Look at how much the government has helped this movement (first computer, internet funding, etc.) - Point out many paradoxes - “Internet Apartheid” of the lower classes being the least to benefit from IT Mixed economy - An economic system combining private & public enterprise - mix of commodities & gifts. Gift economy - An economy driven less by money than by social norms & customs, reciprocity & expectations. It's the constant exchange of potentially valuable with an assumed eventual reward....
