Texas Consults Directions: Use your text to answer these questions about the Consultation of 1835.
4. Where was the Consultation of 1835 held? San Felipe
5. Why was this location chosen? San Felipe was chosen because it had a printing press that would allow the Texans to massproduce records of their meetings.
6. What important decision did delegates face as the Consultation began? Should they align themselves with Federalists in Mexico who opposed Santa Anna and work to restore the rights granted in the Constitution of 1824? Or, should they seek independence from Mexico?
7. With what two parties did delegates align themselves? War Party: favored an immediate declaration of independence from Mexico. Peace Party: The Peace Party was just as committed to fighting Santa Anna’s rule. But, they were not ready to declare independence.

Steps Toward Independence 9. Who did delegates blame for their troubles with Mexico? They blamed Santa Anna for the troubles.
10. What did delegates offer to people who would fight alongside them? They offered land to anyone who fought alongside them.
11. What were the three parts of the Texas provisional government? The delegates decided on a government made up of a governor, a lieutenant governor, and a general council.
12. To which party did Henry Smith belong, and to which party did most of the members of the general council belong? Smith belonged to the War party, but most of the people chosen for the general council represented the Peace Party.
13. What roles were Sam Houston and Stephen Austin assigned? The Consultation created a regular, or official, army and named Sam Houston as its commander. The Consultation also chose Stephen Austin, William Wharton, and Branch T. Archer as commissioners to the United States.
