Realization of ASIC Technology for Traffic Light Controlling based on Vehicle density Sarang Samangadkar, M.Tech (VLSI Design), Email:- [email protected] ABSTRACT:- This paper describes the review of the survey made on the realization of Traffic light controlling based on the vehicle density using ASIC Technology. Now-a-days we experiencing that the recent traffic controlling is controlled by using intelligent Microcontroller based embedded circuitries or FPGA tools, independent of the type of traffic ways for e.g. 4-ways, 3-ways, etc. But the controlling system is based on the timing of the RED, YELLOW and GREEN light signals. These traffic light controllers have limitations because it uses the pre-defined hardware, which is functioning according to the program that does not have the flexibility of modification on real time basis. Due to the fixed time intervals of GREEN, YELLOW and RED signals the waiting time is more and car uses more fuel. To make traffic light controlling more efficient, we exploit the emergence of new technique of the realization of traffic controlling based on Vehicle density instead of timing of the signals, using ASIC technology. This makes the use of all ASIC design steps as per the design flow. The programming language which we will going to use in fulfilling our aim is Verilog hardware description language. The paper describes the investigation report of this goal, with features such as sensing of the vehicle density using video cameras. The ASIC reduces the system cost, area, power consumption and also well defined operational modes and timing management flexibility. Keywords:- Traffic Light control, Vehicle density, Camera for sensing the vehicles density, Verilog, ASIC for traffic Control. INTRODUCTION & SCOPE:- The control of the road traffic and essential management of light's timing is the most crucial part of any city's traffic system; either it is a small town or a large metropolitan city in any country[1]. There are many intelligent traffic management systems that manage road traffic with the goal of improving traffic safety, optimizing the speed of the flow of traffic, and minimizing the energy consumption of vehicles running on the roads[3]. The problem of traffic lights is that how to respond dynamically changing traffic environment adaptively to improve controlling efficiency. This problem can be overcame with the modern technologies such as insertion of intelligent processors such as microprocessors and microcontrollers (like 8051, ARM, PIC), WSN networks, using PLC's and FPGA's. Even if the circuitries and architectures based on these tools are efficient in real time traffic controlling, there is a major point we should have to consider is size, area and power consumption of the circuit. This paper defines the new idea to implement the goal of traffic controlling based on density using ASIC technology. The ASIC (termed as Application Specific Integrated Circuit), is a microchip or an (Integrated Circuit) designed for a special application. ASIC designs offer a very attractive solution for many high volume applications. They enable significant amounts of circuitry to be incorporated onto a single chip. You might contrast it with general integrated circuits, such as the microprocessor and the random access memory chips in your PC. They offer speed, and performance that would not be possible when discrete components were used The following figure (fig.1) shows the example of ASIC chip bundled in a tray....
