Reflection Paper on Our Planet: Our Business The Earth is on the brink of destruction and that – is worrisome. It’s quite alarming to see the progression of how humans brought Earth to its current situation. Although the documentary “Our Planet: Our Business” was created to call the attention of business owners to take active steps in restoring Earth before environmental collapse, there are also concepts mentioned in the video that a non-business owner like me can adapt to help in this campaign. One, reduce carbon footprint. The first of the five universal goals as mentioned in the documentary is zero carbon. That is something I believe we all need to do in order to minimize the harmful influence on the environment. Climate change and air pollution are two of environmental problems being caused by carbon emissions. Reducing our carbon footprint will both benefit the environment and the economy. Saving energy by turning off lights and unplugging devices when not in use, selecting energy-efficient products, recycling waste, trying other modes of transportation– are a few of the things people can put into practice. Personally, I’ve been using electric bikes since 2014 to get to work or other places, instead of driving a motorbike or a car. Electric bikes do not emit carbon dioxide thus, it has a positive influence on the environment. Two, stop creating trash. Another universal goal that I believe anyone must implement in their everyday life. Doing so, not only prevents pollution but also protects the ecosystem. I was fortunate that in high school, our biology teacher reiterated the importance of the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, and recycle. I’ve been following it since then. That also somehow influenced me in other aspects of my life – like as much as possible, I don't buy plastic. That's because every time I see one, I would recall her lecture on it - plastic is one of the leading pollutants and it's nonbiodegradable. In addition to that, when I shop for food, I only buy what I need. By doing so, I’m indirectly reducing waste processing. On a side note, the words “There's no such thing as waste, actually waste is just a resource in the wrong place.” reminded me of an article about waste management I've read before. Although it's quite true that waste can be used as a resource, in some countries, there's a lack of support from the government - especially in developing countries where they have to rely on volunteers to collect, sort, and recycle a portion of the generated waste. The lack of funding can be seen as a hindrance in turning waste into something useful. In my opinion, the government should support this kind of project as it's also a sustainable way to protect the ecosystem. All things considered, the message in the documentary is clear - everyone needs to exert effort to save the planet before it is too late. The consequences are dire and they shouldn’t be ignored. These words sum it all up – “While our past has been written, our future is yet to be determined and it is in our hands.”...
