diagnosis of DMDD. DMDD explained (No. 10). (2019, July). https://www.nimh.nih.gov Most children will begin to develop signs of disruptive mood disorder during preschool years with severe anger outbursts. Children with DMDD will show aggression to parents, teachers, and classmates where the child may become angry often, touchy, grouchy, or easily set-off. Youth with DMDD have outbursts that are usually out of proportion whether the intensity or duration, and the outbursts can be either verbal or behavioral. As verbal outbursts are often described as rages, fits, or tantrums. Children may yell, cry for excessive periods of time without any reason. Physical outbursts are directed toward people or property, and may throw objects, hit, slap, bite others, destroy toys or furniture or act in a harmful or disruptive manner. ( wiki. (2020, October). Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (No. 8). https://www.wikipedia.org) Youth with DMDD have difficulty attending, processing, and responding to negative emotional occurrences and social experiences in everyday life. For example studies have shown youth who are dealing with DMDD have problems with social cues and emotional expressions from others. Youth will have a hard time controlling feelings and sadness, fearfulness, and anger. DMDD affects the amygdala which is the area of the brain that controls the ability to feel certain emotions and perceive them from others. Children with DMDD will often experience difficulty regulating negative emotions, researchers asked children diagnosed with DMDD to play computer games that are set up so the child will lose the game, while playing the game children DMDD report more negative emotions than their other peers.

(wiki. (2020, October). Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (No. 8). https://www.wikipedia.org) Youths who are diagnosed with the disorder will be involved in disruptive and immature behavior such as scowling, and teasing others, and become more upset and less effective in combating their negative emotions The medications and proper treatment for DMDD is determined based on the severity of the disorder and the person's response to the symptoms. Doctors may recommend antidepressant medications for treating the underlying symptoms of disruptive mood disorder such as treating the irritability and sadness. When treating youth with unusually strong temper outbursts a doctor may recommend atypical antipsychotic medications such as Risperidone. For treatment in children doctors will prescribe a stimulant medication to reduce the symptoms of impulse decisions. The downside to taking antidepressants is they can become highly addictive if not taken properly or taken too often, specific counselling can be an option for teens and children to talk about their symptoms and broadcast their feelings and opinions and get insight and clarity. 2020 Child Mind Institute INC.
