Description

Thesis: Although Selena Quintanilla was the diva of her time, she has been forgotten by a vast majority of people. However, she is still thriving in the Hispanic community. [revamp] Selena Quintanilla was the diva of her time. Unfortunately, she was killed in the prime of her career. Opening Paragraph: Selena Quintanilla was an amazing Tejano-American singer. Her career blossomed in 1982 but unfortunately came to an abrupt halt in 1995 when she was killed. Although she was the diva of her time, she has been forgotten by a vast majority of people. However, she is still thriving in the Hispanic community. Her family still tries to fulfill her wishes and keep her memory alive. [Put in introductory paragraph to talking about M.A.C., hologram, etc.] Section One: Childhood (?)  



Born April 16, 1971 Her father first noticed her talent when she was 6. o “He told People magazine, ‘Her timing, her pitch were perfect, I could see it from day one.’” [Wikipedia quote] o http://people.com/archive/cover-story-before-her-time-vol-43-no-15/ With Abraham Quintanilla III on bass, Suzette Quintanilla on drums, and Selena singing, they often played at their father’s Tex-Mex restaurant, Papa Gayo’s in Lake Jackson, Texas, until it had to close due to recession

Section Two: Education- Maybe cut this part out 

Music success interfered with education o Whenever she did go to school, teachers would be concerned with how tired she was o Her father took her out of school in 8th grade o Marilyn Greer, one of her teachers, didn’t approve of her musical career  Threatened to report Quintanilla Jr. to the Texas Board of Education  He told her to mind her own business (pretty sure it was said in a different connotation) o She eventually earned her h.s. diploma at the age of 17 from the American School of Correspondence in Chicago o Enrolled at Pacific Western University, taking up business administration as her major subject

Section Three: Type of Music  

 

She wanted to do songs in English but was “forced” (term used loosely) to do Tejano music Tejano music o Male dominated o Spanish language o German influences of polka, jazz, and country o Made popular by Mexicans in the United States o Originates from Mexican-American populations of Central and Southern Texas Had to learn Spanish phonetically while recording with the help of her father She is referred to as the Queen of Tejano

Section Four: Her Death  

Killed on March 31, 1995 Killed by Yolanda Saldívar o Manager of Selena’s boutiques o Ran her fan club o Quintanilla Jr. believes she was demonically possessed at the time of the murder [Viva Selena article] Shot and killed her in Selena’s hotel room at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi Severed a major artery in her right shoulder o Severe bleed out o D.O.A. at hospital o An autopsy was performed on the same day due to overwhelming media interest.[139] It revealed that the bullet had entered Selena's upper right back, near her shoulder blade, passed through her chest cavity, severed the right subclavian artery, and exited her right upper chest.[139] Doctors said that if the bullet had been only one millimeter higher or lower, the wound would have been less severe.[139] [Copy and pasted from Wikipedia] o Cite all of this with Famous Crime Scene show At Saldivar’s trial, her attorney, Douglas Tinker, gave a recount of Saldivar’s version of the story o “Yolanda had supposedly tried to commit suicide after arguing with Selena in room 158. Section Five: Introduction to how her memory is kept alive 

Her family still tries to fulfill her wishes and keep her memory alive. o Know she’d be very happy finally having her own makeup collection  It being with M.A.C. being even more important o Honored with a Hollywood Star on Walk of Fame o Wax figure o Have decided to do a holographic tour o Selena movie o Worked with [look through article for person’s name] to create a festival in her remembrance

Section Six: M.A.C. Collection  

First launched Oct. 2016 until Nov. 17, 2016 Fans willed it into existence with a Change.org petition o Petition was started Feb. 15, 2015 o Original goal was 5,000  Hit that goal in less than 24 hours o M.A.C. announced July 16, 2015 they would be making the line in 2016
