Description

Paper Outline I. Introduction A. State thesis: The many different artistic movements within the 20th century affected how and where jewelry was worn, how the jewelry was made, as well as who wore it. During the 20th century is when jewelry really started to become more mainstream and available at prices that anyone could afford. The jewelry that was worn also started to become an art piece or focal component of it's own, rather than just another adornment to show social status. B. With the wide varieties in art forms, came many different styles and growths within jewelry. 1. Jewelry began to be regarded as an art form and branched from the traditional styles. 2. New techniques allowed for jewelry to be made faster, easier, and cheaper. 3. Jewelry was worn by more people than previous centuries. II. First Main Point: Jewelry began to be regarded as an art form and branched from the traditional styles. A. Pieces became more sculptural and difficult to wear on a daily basis so that they would be more fashionable for special occasions. B. Some artists made jewelry pieces that were more for display as art, rather than as something that was expected to be worn. C. Jewelry pieces took on the styles of the Avant-garde movement, Futurism, and Cubism. III. Second main point: New techniques allowed for jewelry to be made faster, easier, and cheaper. A. New machinery allowed for mass-produced pieces that would've been handmade before to be made in a fraction of the time. B. Additional new machines could put pieces together, finishing considerable amounts of chain within minutes that might’ve taken hours by hand. C. Manufacturers learned how to make "cheap" jewelry out of base metals rather than the metals with more silver or gold mixed in. IV. Third main point: Jewelry was worn by more people than previous centuries. A. Pierced ears began to become more widespread among women. B. With more machine made jewelry as well as cheaper materials, more of the

middle-class folk could afford jewelry who previously may have seen it as an unnecessary expense. C. Styles within clothing became a bit more relaxed which left room for jewelry to fill the difference of where the clothing would’ve all covered before. V. Summary and Conclusions A. With the wide varieties in art forms, came many different styles and growths within jewelry. Jewelry began to be viewed as a true art form. New machinery and techniques meant a huge growth in the jewelry business on the creators’ side. Within the public jewelry became easier to have, and to wear. B. In my opinion, the twentieth century, with these various reasons for growth of jewelry, is the main reason why jewelry is considered a respectable art form today.
