Description

James Bruce ENGL1010 May 31, 2021 Responding to “The Way We Lie” 1. Throughout the essay, the author debates back and forth between whether or not lying hurts those around her and situations around her. It is very clear that this is a difficult moral dilemma, both for the author and for myself personally. However, I feel that throughout the essay, she provides ample evidence that lying does, in fact, hurt those around us. In the different types of lies, she explains situations that pertain to each specific lie. It is evident she tries to remain unbiased, but she seems to lean more towards the negative side of things. Personally, I believe that lying does hurt things, even if it has good intentions. Even if it benefits you in the moment, there will always be a negative long term effect. I am a strong believer in karma, and lying for whatever reason seems to bring around bad karma. 2. The author formatted each section in a specific way, which made it easier to understand as a reader. She would provide an example describing the scenario and then explain the scenario and logic behind it, or vice versa. Regardless, there was always an example and a reasoning behind it. The formatting helps with overall comprehension and understanding on how each lie has its own unique impact and set of consequences. The author also used headings to differentiate the different types of lies, which helped with the overall organizational flow of things. I struggle with ADHD, so this helped a lot with my focus. 3. A current event situation that comes to mind is a personal situation with my girlfriend’s landlord. She was recently evicted with less than a twenty four hour notice from her apartment because of the presence of her emotional support animal, which is a part of her

treatment plan for her severe chronic illness. The landlord stated he was deathly allergic to cats, which I see as a form of deception as described in the essay. This is because the addition of “deathly” is an exaggeration: he had been down there several times, into her apartment, with zero life threatening or even apparent symptoms of an allergic reaction. While there does not seem to be a clear gain to evicting my girlfriend for something that is protected by the Utah Housing Act, it is clear there is a form of deception going on here. I think the author provides ample evidence to clearly support her case for the ways we lie, and deception seems evident in my day to day life events. This situation also reinforces my above points that lying does ultimately hurt things....
