Latin Prose Composition: revision guide

You need to know the following, in this order: 1. Vocabulary So you know the WORDS to use! Use the AS word list, learning English into Latin. Also the words you have been noting down this term. 2. Accidence So you know which ENDINGS to use on the words. Concentrate on nouns, adjectives and verbs, including common irregular verbs, plus pronouns. Also see OCR checklist (attached). 3. Syntax So you know which CONSTRUCTION to use to put the words together into sentences. Use the checklist from the OCR specification (attached). 4. Style So you put your sentences together in the best possible STYLE (10 out of 50 marks for this!). See attached sheet for style tips.

Good choice of vocab, including compound verbs (see attached) Use of connectives (see below) Choosing the appropriate construction eg gerundive Good use of subordination (eg use of participle phrase such as ablative absolute to avoid more than one main verb in a sentence) 5. Good word order (eg emphasising important word by putting it first or last, putting the antecedent of a relative [qui] clause next to the clause, putting inquit in the middle of a quote not at the beginning), nicely sandwiched phrases like paucis post diebus. 6. General “latinity” ie so it sounds like Latin! Nice Latin phrases to use: quae cum ita sint quibus verbis dictis/auditis summa vi quo/ubi cum advenisset quo cognito his/quibus rebus factis factum est ut (it happened that...)

Connectives: Connecting relatives (qui etc) autem, tamen (2nd word) quidem, vero (2nd word) quidam etc (a certain...) (after the noun it refers to) tum/deinde/postea (1st word)

nam, sed (1st word)...
