Romeo and Juliet: Act 2, Scene 2 This scene takes place at night in a garden. How does it affect the content of the speeches? What are the comparisons or metaphors in this scene? Point out the vocabulary related to the semantic field of nature and the senses. How would you describe the relationship between Romeo and Juliet at this point: what is happening? Do we get a sense of tragedy or of joy in this scene? Explain where and why. How does Shakespeare create suspense and dynamism in the dialogue? Can you think of any love scene in literature or film that resembles this one? Do we get the feeling that they are sincere in their love?

In relation to the content of the speeches, this scene takes place at night because is probably the only way to show their love in privacy. As we all know their families were againts this relationship. If we analyze carefully the speeches, Romeo is making a comparison between Juliet and the sunrise, because she represents the light and beautiful, as the opposite of the moon, that is represented as sick. So he uses the night to make some comparisons between his love, and their impediments. On the other hand, if we analize comparisons and metaphor (literary figures) we can prove that this scene is full of that. For instance: actually in the beginning of the scene, we can observe a clear comparison between a window and the east and also between the sun and Juliet more likely a metaphor which describes how much important is Juliet for him. (This fact bolsters the idea of the infatuation). Moreover, there is another comparison between the moon and the sickness, also the moon is relationed with Rosaline that is actually the opposite of Juliet. There is another comparison between Juliet and an angel. And finally there is another interesting metaphor when Romeo compares his name with an enemy that means the impossible love because of their families. In relation to the vocabulary of nature and the senses, we can observe: the light, the sun, the moon, envious, sick, pale, bold, stars, heaven, glorious, clouds, rose, the night, death, hatred, thunderbolt, loving, sadness... Actually if we analyze this scene carefully we can see that they want to scape from the social world in order to love freely. Here Romeo tries to show his great passion for Juliet in a violent way. But also Juliet is trying to protect her honor because of the society. In this case the atmosphere is confused, because they know that they are in risk, so here starts the dramatic conflict. We get a sense of joy because they are planning their marriage in a garden at night. The place represents the privacy and the secretive. About the dialogue, Shakespeare creates suspense all the time because of the fast action and conflicts. Here the conflict is meanly concerned in find out if love is enough strongly to overcome the heatred. But the most important element is the Dramatic Irony, that he uses around the act because it creates tension and doubts for the audience.

In my opinion, this scene reminds me the film of Aladdin, when he goes to the balcony of his love, also at the night and secretly. And in general it reminds me The Matchmaker by Fernando de Rojas. Actually, I think that we do not get the feeling that they are sincere, because Romeo was in love with Rosaline first, but when he saw Juliet he felt in love with her, so we can see capricious love here really fast. But on the other hand, Shakespeare tries to persuade the audience with some words and acts, so we finally can say that their love is sincere at the final because they are able to die for love....
