Roots: Worksheet #1 Theme: The Big Business of Slavery Unit 1: Colonial and Early America (1600-1800) Directions: This worksheet will be counted, as six class work assignments for each day the class will view the video. Each of the following questions should be answered in a well-written paragraph; one or two sentence responses are not acceptable. (Unless otherwise noted) Topic: Slave Trade & New World Episode 1 (This episode takes place over a span of two years)  Chapter 5; Note the psychological state of Captain Davis (Davy), explain how it gradually changes over the course of the story to final how it compares and contrasts at the end of his voyage.  Chapter 7; Explain the purpose of each of the “hardware” that Mr. Slater reviews with Captain Davy (no paragraph needed)  Chapter 9; Explain the mentality of a slaver as represented by Mr. Slater, what are the rationales used to justify a slavers’ job.  Chapter 13; Explain the process of the actual trading of slaves and the mentality of each of the men involved in this trade.  Chapter 17; [Kunta Kinte, the main character is introduced in this scene] How slaves are actually captured, what is the mentality of each of the individuals involved here (Hint: look at their facial expressions)  Chapter 18; (This scene begins with captured Africans on a beach waiting to be loaded onto ships) Explain the “philosophy” that Mr. Slater and Captain Davy debate over and how it is represented on the faces of the both slaver and slaves on the beach.  Chapter 21; [Wrestler; is a man who trained Kunta Kinte during his manhood training (boot camp)] Describe the physical conditions of the hold of the ship and how the Africans react to their state.  Chapter 22-23; how do they daily routines onboard a slave ship reinforces the mentality and justifications of slavery as denoted in Chapter 9.  Chapter 26; Explain the key elements to the slave plans for resistance Episode 2  Chapter 4; Describe how the revolt occurs and what made it a success/failure.  Chapter 5; Compare and contrast the mentality of the two men in this scene and how they describe/view the Triangular Trade

Episode2  Chapter 6; Explain how a slave auction is prepared and setup  Chapter 8/9; Explain the colonial view of slavery, specifically on their view of indentured servitude, and the demands specifically for African men and women  Chapter 11/12; Explain the social roles/relationships between John Reynolds, Fiddler and Kunta Kinte, as well as how they these roles/relationships are used to control African slaves.  Chapter 13-15; Life on the Plantation-Compare and contrast how Slave owners and slaves live on the plantation. Be sure to answer how their respective family life, living quarters and how their relationships to each (master to slave, overseer to master, slave to slave) other are setup.  Chapter 17; Explain the different views and justifications for slavery held by the Reynolds family and their overseer (Mr. Ames).  Chapter 22; Explain Fiddler’s anger and hope/happiness for Kunta in this scene.  Chapter 23; Warning; There is Graphic Violence in this Scene. Explain the psychological effects of Mr. Ames punishment to Kunta, the rest of the slaves and to the Reynolds family.

Episode 3 (The is episode begins 9 years after the last episode, it is Sept. 1776)  Chapter 4; Explain the notion of the “law” according to Fiddler and how it relates the Kunta’s notion of “being free”.  Chapter 6; Explain how the system/rational of re-capturing runaway slaves.  Chapter 9/10; [This scene begins with Kunta talking with Fanta/Maggie (a girl that Kunta loved in Africa)] Compare and Contrast how nine years of slavery has affected Kunta’s and Fanta/Maggie’s personality and outlook at life.  Chapter 13-15; (This scene begins four years later in 1780). No questions, but important to the storyline  Chapter 18-20; Explain how Kunta and Bell develop a relationship, which leads to marriage. Make special note on how the institution of slavery impacts all aspect of this relationship.  Chapter 21; (This scene begins with Kunta and Fiddler driving Dr. Reynolds to a party) Explain the notion of the “new strange lost tribe” and this struggle between African v American.  Chapter 22; Explain how has the institution of slavery manipulated family life into a form of control over slaves.  Chapter 24-26; Explain how Kunta resolves his “internal struggle” between staying on the plantation and running away for the third time....
