PART

I: ESSAY Given the fact that your professor believed that the first mass in the Philippines was held in the Island of Limasawa, how will you convince him that the mass was held in Butuan? (You can identify some evidence and then synthesize. Cite your references.) Nearing five centuries since the first Mass in the Philippines happened. Ferdinand Magellan who leads the first voyage around the world happened to set foot in our land, during the time of finding Spice Islands. He with his entire team propagates the Christianity to our land, during this time 2 major mainland we’re said to be the place of the first mass in the Philippines, but the debates continue whether it was held on Limasawa Island, in Agusan or in Butuan in Mindanao. Two main books are presented as evidence for Limasawa but many documentaries and historian prove that Butuan is where the first mass in the Philippines happened. In the previous research, historian found the artifacts like balanghai in Butual that prove Magellan arrival at Mindanao, this also includes the documents that are given to the queen mother of France. While digging the history, historian also prove that the cross tradition only passes to Limasawa on the 400th year anniversaries. Fernando Collins Llabor Evangelica also said on his book published in Madrid on 1663 that Magellan planted the cross on his arrival at Butuan in Mindanao According to Tabios (2020), the Mojares panel, led by Dr. Resil B. Mojares suggest to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) to stick to the result of research that the first mass was held in Southern Leyte in 1521 which was stated on the investigations of the panel scholars on August 18, 2018. The research of Tabios, proves Alexander Lopez claims that the first Catholic mass was held in Butuan City. A lot of investigation was made, also the citation of Dr. Potenciano R. Malvar a local historian in the Philippines who advocates the recognition of the Butuan City as the site of where the first mass was held in our country. The book was entitled “Beyond the Pale: Limasawa Hoax, A Tragedy in Philippine History” that was launched on April 7, 2021. The book tells that Dr. Malvar himself that there are panels created before the Mojares Panel. Malvar did personally the research in different countries to support the claim of where the first mass was held. Spain, Portugal, Italy and the libraries in Boston and Yale in the United States which are very important places to investigate as they contributed a lot on the history of the Philippines. Based on the article of Orejas (2020), Malvar stated in his book the latitudes where the cross with crown was established which is documented by Francisco Albo and it is in 9 1/3-degree north latitude and the Limasawa Island or Mazaua was in 9 degree 55’ latitude which is very far from 9 1/3-degree North latitude. Malvar also found out that Gancayco panel created by the former National Historical Institute in 1996, on their report on 1998 they’ve deleted six sentences in the account of Pigafetta that would cause the Limasawa claim to debunk and the Mazaua Island was only in the map until 1902 due to the earthquake and the mainland got filled with flood, in the present day the Mazaua is thought to be one of the villages in Butuan City, the Barangay Masao.

To conclude, Butuan City is where the first mass held here in the Philippines. This supports the book of Dr. Potenciano Malvar that undergo some citation and proof reading. The Claim of Butuan City of being the location of the first mass in the Philippines contain more evidence than Limasawa. Therefore, the location of the first mass is Butuan and not Limasawa.

PART II: POEM

The beast in the island The wind from the west, are up to some quest The raging ocean are blowing our guest The pearl and orient have we lost in abysses When the footprint of Spaniard started to hiss

The abuse of power flourished Shall we hail to the king, oppress by the beast Flowers of native rights are set aside No more pride left to our side

Force exertion, all men should work High taxes but no respect We are controlled and being abuse It is the time to for us to make a pause

We are the natives, clear your mind Don’t let cold blood lead our land Raise our flag, and gain some respect We are the owners and not the slaves.
