Steven Ajayi Rules in Basketball Why does sports have rules and regulations? The main reason why sports have rules and regulations is to ensure that everyone who has something to do with the sport has an understating with what is going on. Rules and regulations are important to everyone if there is no rule procedures the sports won’t be very safe and anything can happen and anything can be carried out anyhow. This is why players are punished for the misconduct that they have shown. What is the role of the FIBA? The FIBA’s is a foundation of sports culture and legacy of basketball. Their role is to ensure that all rules are being applied to the game. They also need to reinforce rules when needed. They are also in charge of the punishment of a player when they have not abided with the rules set by them.

Here I am displaying the rules of Basketball and the consequences that are carried out if the rule is not followed.

Carrying Carrying can be considered an offence in basketball. Carrying is when a player dribbles the ball after leaving it rest in their hands. Carrying is similar to double dribble because the player stops dribbling for some time and then resumes to bouncing it. When a player is carrying his hand is under the ball and the player is moving with the ball in the palm of his/her palm Players can avoid Carrying if they keep the palm of their hands facing the ground when making contact with the ball. Players usually slide there hand leftto-right and vice versa to move the ball while bouncing it to resist the ball resting this also helps them with ball control. When a carry is performed the official would stop the play by blowing the whistle and stop the play or could making a signal and when this is done the play has become dead this means the play has been paused to award the side throw to the opposition or a turnover is performed The side throw is taken from the side line of the court closest to where the offence has happened and the throw should be in line with where the incident occurred.

The referee indicates fouls by hand signals. The hand signal for carrying is when the referee by raising his hands from the side of the court and wave it from side to side.. The reason for this is to clearly show that a foul has been given.

Travelling Travelling is an offence in basketball which players from all age groups are penalised for doing. When travelling is performed the official would blow his whistle and stop the play or make a signal to signify a foul has been taken place .When a travel is performed by a player a side line throw is awarded to the opposition. Travelling is when the ball is in the hands of a player and the player takes 3 or more steps without bouncing it. Travelling can also be called for carrying and an unestablished pivot foot. An unestablished pivot foot is a pivot foot that is not recognised. The only time travelling is accepted is in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. This is not an official game/match. The Slam Dunk Contest is a competition where talented basketballers try to perform their best Dunk Slam in front of judges. If a travel is to be prevented the player with the ball should always bounce the ball when moving or pass or shoot the ball after the 3 steps without bouncing the ball is completed. It is not possible to travel while bouncing the ball. The officials will stop the play by blowing there whistle and indicating that the play should be stopped. And when the play wants to be resumed the referee would blow the will and indicate that also.

Double Dribble Double dribbling is an offence in basketball which players from all age groups are penalised for. Double dribble is when a player is when a player is in motion with the ball bouncing at their hands they stop bouncing the ball then resume bouncing it without interacting with one of their teammates by passing in the space of repeatedly bouncing the ball. When a Double dribble is performed a side line throw-in is awarded to the opposition. Travelling can also be called for carrying and an unestablished pivot foot. A pivot foot is when a player suddenly stop running with the ball with the ball in his hand. It can be described by when a foot like when the other foot touches in a step. A player can’t change his pivot foot. If a player doesn’t perform a pivot foot and is still moving with the ball in

hand it is called an unestablished pivot foot. There is an exception to the double dribble rule and the exception is called a Power Dribble. Power dribbling is a technique in basketball. The power dribble can only be performed once and a player can only attempt a power dribble if received the ball in the lane. The lane is an area of the court. The officials wouldn’t penalise a player for committing a power dribble. When a player is performing a power dribble the play is not paused or stopped this is because the power dribble is not an offence in basketball.

Goal Tending Goal Tending is a violation in basketball. A goal tend is when a player from the defending team denies the ball from entering the hoop when the ball is just about to drop into it. This offence happens on the counter attack by the attacking team The ball has to be above the rim and the ball shouldn’t of made contact with the rim before it can be classified as a goal tend offence. This means that a foul from an accused goal tend can only be approved if a player gets the balls slapped or pushed out of his hands or ball is denied by a defending player. Goal tending is classified as an Illegal block of a possible point(s). When a goal tend is performed by the defending team against the attacking team the attacking team receives points just like the scored the basket shot that has intentionally been made. Goal tending can happen when a player is getting closer to the basket ready to a shot on the basket but a player behind slaps or denies an open goal scoring opportunity. When a goal tend is performed the play is stopped and the attacking team is given the points and a side line throw in is awarded as well.

Kicking Ball kicking is a violation in Basketball. If an attacking player deliberately kicks the ball during open play a throw in is awarded to the defending team out of bounds from the side line closest to where the incident happened. If this violation takes place in the backcourt the stop timer remains the same or resets back to 14 seconds. The time resets because an incident occurred and they are giving the team an extra 14 seconds to get the ball out of the defensive team’s court. The play could also pause but the time will not continue during an incident.

Backcourt is the defensives teams’ half court. The main reason for players to be penalised for kicking the basketball is because the ball used for basketball is very hard and if the ball hits a players head it could cause terrible damage to the head. If a player kicks the basketball intentionally the referee could ask the player to exit the court. This is because the player has not complied with the rules and a basketball is very hard and if it hits the face of a person who is not expecting it could cause serious harm. This foul is indicated and signalled as a technical foul. The decision makings of fouls can change depending on the foul committed. The referee could give either one or two free throws for the action of kicking. This foul could even see the player exiting the court.

Over and Back Over and back is an offence in basketball which can result in a turnover. Over and back is when a player come from frontcourt too backcourt to receive a loose ball after he has moved back into front court. This violation can be seen as back court violation. The reason over and back is performed is to keep the ball on the attacking players side of court. When an over and out violation is performed the referee awards the ball to the opposition and a turnover takes place or a throw in from the side line closest to where the incident occurred takes place which is usually the half way line. The Over and back rule slightly changes for different age groups and different basket balling abilities. The official will stop the match when this action takes place.

24 Second Shot Clock The main aim of the shot clock is to quicken the pace of the game and to try and enable both teams to be on the attacking foot constantly. It is designed to make sure the players do not take long before having an attempt on the hoop. If a team loses possession of the ball the timer is reset and the 24 seconds begin for the other team. If a team takes does not complete the action in 24 seconds the referee will award possession

to the opposition by giving them a side line throw. If the ball goes out of court and the team still has possession of the ball the clock does not reset. The timer can stop if a jump ball situation is called. Contact Contact is a violation in basketball because basketball is a non-contact sport therefore if contact happens between players on the court the player who is making contact with the other player is penalised. There is a limit on fouls a player is allowed to commit in basketball if a player commits this number of fouls in the game this player will be ejected. When a makes contact with an attacking player in line or in front of their free throw line. A free throw is awarded to the opposition. A free throw is an open throw 15 feet away from the basket. It consists of 2 shoots worth 1 point each. Players usually use move their hands when a player wants to make an attempt on the basket this is because they want to avoid making contact with the opponents. There are different types of contact fouls which can be pushing, shoving, dragging and pulling. A personal foul is the common type of foul in basketball. There are different types of personal fouls which can be charging, blacking and offensive fouls....
