The six characteristics of bureaucracy according to Weber are specialization and division of labor, hierarchical authority structure, rules and regulations; technical competence guidelines; impersonality and personal indifference , and achievement based advancements . According to Weber, society is most efficient when it is organized this way . Bureaucracy maintains order, maximizes efficiency, and encourages fairness in modern society . Some examples of bureaucracy that we see here in America today are our education system, paying taxed / receiving social security , and receiving protection from the emergency services such as the police .and fire dept Division of labor can be simply explained as the splitting up the work load amongst employees based on expertise . Workers and departments have clearly defined roles and expectations in which they are responsible for and do not cross over into different departments. The hierarchical management structure adds levels of authority where workers are being are held accountable for the work they do by a supervisor, or administrator . Hierarchical structure is necessary for communication, delegation and the division of responsibilities within a team. This leads into rules and regulations, which the hierarchal management enforces amongst the workers. Since workers are paid for their job, they also have to agree

to the rules in the contract provided by the job to maintain their salary. Workers also need to have some degree of technical competence to understand their job role, function and contracts. It would not work in favor of the employer or the employee to have a worker that doesn’t fully understand their job. In a bureaucracy , relationships between employees should only be professional. Having an impersonal environment creates an environment where situations are only based on facts and leaves no room for bias. Lastly, and most importantly, in a bureaucracy jobs are given on an achievement-based advancement. Job placement and promotions within an organization should be based solely on achievement and .qualifications Bureaucracy is important in maintaining social and political order. When bureaucracy is not maintained, it often leads to corrupt government officials and biased legislation being imposed on citizens. Our education system today is bureaucratic in that people complete degrees, certifications in order to be hired for specialized jobs. We actively participate in a bureaucracy when we pay our taxes to . help fund for the fire dept. and police dept. which in turn serve to protect us as well...
