Salmon Crested Cockatoo- Reading Ralley

Our next ambassador rocks a cool mohawk, and its pink! This ambassador lives in far East Asia and can be very loud! He is very affectionate, loves pets and can be very playful. Meet Jovi our salmon crested cockatoo!

Jovi has white-pink feathers with a definite peachy glow with a large crest on the top of his head. This crest looks like a mohawk when its raised. When the crest is lowered, the feathers fold back over the head and the crest is hardly visible. Jovi uses this crest on his head for communication. When raised up the crest can mean that a cockatoo is trying to look handsome for a girl cockatoo; or defending it’s territory or his friends, or even calling his friends. Jovi could be showing that he is curios, excited, surprised, scared or even frustrated. These are all emotions that we express by facial expressions. For a cockatoo he uses his crest. When people come close to a cockatoo -a raised crest may be a warning not to touch them - or else risk being bitten. A lowered crest can mean they are feeling calm, friendly and happy.

Jovi and other cockatoos will never outgrow his or her great need for love and attention. He entertains us Rockstar’s for hours with his how silly he is and

smart. Raise your hand if you think your smart! Well Jovi is so smart he can figure out how to get out of his enclosure and undue locks, he is truly an escape artist. This cockatoo is very intelligent, so we have to provide him with lots of toys to play with

Although Jovi looks like a lot of fun he can be very, very loud! SalmonCrested Cockatoos are not great mimickers like other parrots however they will out scream most birds and will scream for no reason at random. A lot of people don’t realize this and end up buying them as pets. And guess what (lean in lean in) parrots can live up to 100 years old, even older! This means they can be hard to care for, then people release them into their backyards. This isn’t where parrots are used to living! The best thing we can do as Rockstar’s is read all about parrots before purchasing one as a pet. Make sure you are able to take good care of them before you bring them into your home!

Thanks Jovi!...
