Introduction The purpose of this text is threefold: to facilitate understanding of developmental concepts central to postsecondary courses in life-span psychology, to help future nurses learn or review the developmental concepts most likely to be tested on the licensure exams for nurses, and to provide an easy reference to life-span developmental concepts encountered in the practice of nursing. The current text is designed to supplement John W. Santrock's Life-Span Development, 12th edition (2009), with a special emphasis on preparing future nurses. Santrock's text is comprehensive and current, relying on expert research consultants in life-span developmental fields and extensive reviews of recent research and seminal works. Ms. Terri Combs based the first edition of the nursing supplement on Santrock's fifth edition. In addition to revisions and updates of the second edition of the Guide, the supplement was compared to three other current developmental textbooks: Human Development (Papalia, Olds, & Feldman, 2007), Human Development across the Lifespan (Dacey & Travers, 2006), and Human Development (Zanden, Crandell, & Crandell, 2007). This procedure was designed to expand the utility of the supplement. Concepts are arranged in four sections based on developmental sequences: (1) Introduction to Development, Prenatal Development and Birth; (2) Infancy; (3) Childhood and Adolescence; and (4) Adulthood and Death. Each section is accompanied by a short case study and multiple-choice questions. Answers are provided to identify areas for further review. Following the review sections, a practice test is provided. The practice test was designed by adapting questions from the test bank to match the format of the NCLEX-RN exam. After the author adapted the questions, the practice test and rationale were reviewed by Annette Alexander, RN, BS, CNOR. As a healthcare consultant, Ms. Alexander is familiar with the licensure process, the NCLEX-RN exam, the practice of nursing, and the current trends in the field. She emphasized that the latest requirements stress the importance of understanding nursing practice from a developmental perspective. The author, Dr. Kathryn Launey, currently teaches developmental, abnormal, and general psychology at the postsecondary level. She is also a nationally certified school psychologist and a licensed special education teacher.
