Schematic Diagram for the Separation of Group 1 Cations Mixture of Group 1 Cations: Ag+ , Hg22+ and Pb2+ Add 3-5 drops of 6M HCl shake then centrifuge and decant
White precipitate of AgCl, Hg2Cl2, and PbCl2
Solution contains remaining cations (supernatant liquid)
Wash with cold water containing 6M HCl*. Add 20 drops of hot water. Mix, heat in a boiling water bath and stir then centrifuge and decant
White precipitate of AgCl, Hg2Cl2 Wash with hot water. Add 10 drops of 6M NH4OH then centrifuge and decant
Grey precipitate indicates the presence of Hg22+ ion
(For complete precipitation, add another drop of 6M HCl to verify ions precipitating have been removed.)
Solution contains Pb2+ Add 2 drops 0.2M K2CrO4
Yellow precipitate confirms presence of Pb2+
Solution contains Ag+ Divide the filtrate
Add 10 drops of 6M HNO3
White precipitate indicates the presence of Ag+ ion
dd 2 drops of 0.1M KI
Pale yellow precipitate indicates the presence of Ag+ ion...
