Description

Scientific Method Assignment Directions: For this assignment you will choose a topic related to health science. You will act as scientists doing research on the topic by following the scientific method using the steps outlined below. Be sure to take descriptive notes throughout the process. Topic (“Problem”): 1. Question (What is the problem you have? Be specific): What is the most effective way to treat strep throat? 2. Perform background research (What do you need to know about your question? Cite your sources): -

Strep is an infection in the throat and tonsils It’s caused by a bacteria called group A  Streptococcus It’s a common infection with over 3 million cases nationally every year Common symptoms include sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck

3. Form a hypothesis (What is a possible solution to your question? Think of an if-then-statement): If I give someone with strep throat a dose of penicillin everyday for 9 days, then the drug will fight against the infection and kill it off faster than if you don’t treat it and faster compared to cough syrup. 4. Design an experiment (How are you going to test your solution to your problem? What are the steps?): Round up three people with strep throat and have one take penicillin for 9 days, another take cough syrup for the same duration, and another one just drink water. 5. Collect data (What tools would you use for your experiment? What are you looking for?): Mini flashlight and magnifying glass (to examine their tonsils), a notebook to record their symptoms, penicillin, cough syrup, water, and medicine droppers. 6. Analyze data (What tools would you use to analyze your data? Ex. Computers, Charts, Table, etc.): A chart recording who took what liquid, a table to compare their symptoms, and a computer to record any notes. 7. Draw conclusions (How would you know if your solution works?):

On the last day, I would analyze my results that would be based on the wellness checks of my patients and see who healed the fastest. 8. Communicate Results (Who would you tell about your discovery? How would you tell them?): I would write a blog about my findings and share (publish) it the internet, as well as share it with hospitals and other doctors.
