Description

9/19/2017 English 1010 Professor Bernhardt

In “Se Habla Espanol” Tanya Barrientos uses an emotional as she shares her struggles of being a Guatemalan who cannot speak Spanish. She describes how she had trouble fitting into the American culture and the Hispanic culture as well. Barrientos’ parents did not want her speaking Spanish. She says, “People who called themselves Mexican Americans or Afro-Americans were considered dangerous...”(646). Her emotional appeal takes place when she says, “I thought if I stayed away from Spanish, stereotypes would stay away from me.” (646). She also states, “I wish we all had the courage to come out of our hiding places and claim our rightful spot in the broad Latino spectrum… If it will help, I will go first.” She shows she is credible by telling her audience her experiences with struggling to fit in. She sends a message to other Hispanics who find themselves her shoes, to accept who they are....
