Dear Ms Hannd, I would like to thank you for this opportunity to apply for the Graduate RN program at Perth Children’s Hospital. I am in my second year of nursing, studying at the University of Notre Dame with a particular interest in pursuing a career at PCH post graduating. I believe that I have developed excellent communication skills and a great ability to work in a multidisciplinary team due to the clinical placements and employment opportunities I have received. I believe this will make me a strong and well suited candidate for this position. My eagerness to continue learning on the job and the theoretical areas will allow me to continue developing my interpersonal skills, communication and increase my confidence which will help me to apply evidence-based nursing skills in your multidisciplinary team setting. High quality healthcare is an essential right that I believe every patient should receive and is an integral role in preventing unnecessary illness and hospitalisations. High standard of care for each individual not only has an effect on their physical health, it also impacts their mental state which can aid to improve their health status quicker. I strongly believe and feel that I will be committed to PCH’s vision of healthy kids resulting in healthy communities. Providing care and assistance for children of all ages is something I have always aspired. The values of your facility including compassion, respect and equity are all features I value greatly when caring for patients and families in the clinical setting. I am highly motivated to apply for this position. I adore children and enjoy working alongside them due to my particular nanny experience. Being a nanny for different children has allowed me to develop an understanding of the different personalities of every child. I believe that being open minded towards this idea is a great skill a nurse in a paediatric setting must have to enable therapeutic relationships with the patients. Communication with the families is also important to ensure an idea of patient care, diagnosis and discharge. I am dedicated to pursuing a career as a paediatric nurse and think that PCH is the hospital to begin my career and continue learning. I believe my personal and professional qualities I have developed set me up well for this graduate program and I would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to discuss further in person. I have attached my CV and selection criteria in support of my cover letter. Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours sincerely, Kaysey Johnstone

Selection Criteria Statements 1. Demonstrated clinical knowledge and experience in the delivery of evidence-based nursing care within a clinical setting In a clinical setting I have shown clinical knowledge and experience in the delivery of evidence based practice in the clinical setting. This was demonstrated while on a clinical placement at Osborne Park Hospital. On a morning shift it was delegated to me to perform the vital signs on a particular group of patients. One of these patients required a postural blood pressure which showed a drop from 170 systolic pressure to 120 systolic pressure post standing up. I understood that this was a significant blood pressure drop that isn’t a normal finding. My plan was to document the results and to inform my RN mentor. The RN told me to find and bring it up with the patient’s doctor. I presented to the doctor with the patient’s notes and explained what had occurred using the isobar handover technique to pass on this information. Alongside the doctor and his team, it was discussed and finalised that the patient’s frusemide would be withheld until the postural blood pressure results returned to a more reasonable difference. This was all shown through the registered nursing standard 1.1, accesses, analyses, and uses the best available evidence, that includes research findings, for safe, quality practice. Also in the code of ethics for nurses in element 3 which states the nurse is active in developing a core of research-based professional knowledge that supports evidence-based practice. Following this whole situation, I documented my findings in the patient’s notes and handed over the information using the isobar format. (250) 2. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills within a clinical setting It is significant to be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills within the clinical setting. I displayed this whilst on a clinical placement at Joondalup Health Campus. At the beginning of a morning shift on my placement this was when delegation of staff to patients would occur. One morning we were one staff member short as she was running late and wouldn’t arrive to the hospital for another two hours. I communicated with the coordinator and agreed that I would be allocated to that section with an EN. Due to not being medication competent in this semester I would do all the vital signs and showers for all the patients in my allocated section. This was all done through negotiating and rearranging of the staff allocation so that we could do our job in a safe and efficient manner. Although there was not a great deal of conflict, there was still matter that needed to be resolved before we started our shift on the floor so that each patient would receive a high level of care. This was all shown through the registered nursing standard 2.6, uses delegation, supervision, coordination, consultation and referrals in professional relationships to

achieve improved health outcomes. Also displayed in the code of ethics element 4, the nurse sustains a collaborative and respectful relationship with co-workers in nursing and other fields. Following this whole situation, I documented my findings in the patient’s notes and handed over the information using the isobar format. (250) 3. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills within a clinical setting It is important to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills in a clinical setting. I have shown this on my clinical placement at Osborne Park Hospital. A MET call took place on a patient under myself and my mentor RN’s care for the shift. This was an eye opening experience that I was lucky enough to watch in on. The delegation process during this MET call was done safely and everything was controlled and dealt with in a timely manner. Everything was documented correctly and the roles were delegated to the correct people. After the MET call, nearing to the end of our afternoon shift the RN and myself sat down together and wrote in the patient’s progress notes what took place. We discussed and reflected on the situation and finalised the notes. At the end of the shift during handover to night staff I verbally handed over the information regarding the MET call and the patient’s current health state providing any recommendations we had discussed during our shift. I did this with the assistance of my mentor RN and using the isobar format. This was all shown through the registered nursing standard 1.6, maintains accurate, comprehensive, and timely documentation of assessments, planning, decisionmaking, actions and evaluations. Also in registered nursing standard 2.2, communicates effectively, and is respectful of a person’s dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights. Following this whole situation, I documented my findings in the patient’s notes and handed over the information using the isobar format. (250) 4. Demonstrates an understanding of the principle of quality improvement and risk management within practice. During clinical practice it is essential to demonstrate a clear understanding of principles regarding quality improvement and risk management. I demonstrated this criterion on my placement at Osborne Park Hospital. A bariatric patient had been admitted to our stroke rehabilitation ward post a stroke leaving him with right sided stiffness. His goal was to be able to mobilise and walk by himself. Alongside the physiotherapists and occupational therapists, us as nurses had to ensure we were providing quality improvement of his symptoms and preventing risks in particular pressure area care preventing injuries and wounds. Our plan was to gather at least four nurses to regularly enter his room to turn and reposition him ensuring to avoid any pressure injury wounds. Using pillows and rolling techniques this would allow us to change his positioning relieving pressure from the pressure area sites. This all resulted in the patient’s care being high quality and minimising risk to the patient.

This was all shown through the registered nursing standard 3.7, identifies and promotes the integral role of nursing practice and the profession in influencing better health outcomes for people. Also in the code of conduct in principle 2 provide safe, person-centred and evidence-based practice for the health and wellbeing of people and, in partnership with the person, promote shared decision-making and care delivery between the person, nominated partners, family, friends and health professionals. Following this whole situation, I documented my findings in the patient’s notes and handed over the information using the isobar format. (250)...
