The Sentimental Novel ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Living a lifetime She called me from her bedroom, and after staring at her reflection with a look of discontempt, she turned to me. - Up or down? - she asked me, bunching up her dark hair with one hand, and then letting it loose again, shaking it a little. - I like it either way - I said with a small smile of assurance. And then I turned back around, and I looked at her some more through the bathroom mirror instead. I was not lying, she really did look pretty either way. Being completely truthful, I liked her hair in every way. Short or long, curly or straight, even after she had not washed for a few days. I liked it because it smelled of jasmine and honey, and because it had natural waves and even though she wasn’t blonde it still shone in the sun, by some miraculous act of God. But mainly, I liked it because it was hers. And she was a miraculous act of God as well, without a doubt. And I didn’t want just some fortuitous sniff of jasmine and honey. I wanted to be able to drown in that smell, until I got tired. I wanted to smell it as I drifted off to sleep, and as I hazily woke up. I wanted to smell it as I showered, maybe even wear it by mistake, just so I could feel her with me all day long. I could even bear her messiness, and her occasional grumpiness, and her hideous aquamarine bathroom, with fish decals all over; just to see her everyday. I snapped back into reality, and took my eyes off of the hideous goldfish decal previously mentioned. If she could hear me. God, imagine if she could hear me. How she would despise me. I spit out the toothpaste and rinsed my mouth. And then I floated back up, into the clouds. How fortuitous it is to meet somebody you love, and who you are perfectly compatible with. You listen to the same music, and you agree on all of the big things: religion, politics, kids… But at the same time, you are different enough. How odd and lucky it is to find that, not everybody does. - Marcus just ringed. He is downstairs. Come on, he brought his cousin, Maeve. I think you could really hit it off - She yelled from her living room, while putting on her coat. I read this thing in the back of a life coaching book the other day that said that finding your soulmate is a once in a lifetime thing. Marcus is that. And who am I to get in the way of someone living their lifetime....
